Some rough times until I went off to college. They let me off the hook and I guess I earned their respect during those young years. Use to to hate them, but now I love them more than ever

Spanked, hand only, for direct defiance/disobedience, never for making a mistake, etc.

Didn't always eat dinner together, but we mostly had "movie" nights on Fridays as a family. My dad was a musician so he wasn't usually home around dinnertime if he had a gig.

Made us understand that no matter what we did, we were always loved and welcomed at home, even if it was something we had been taught was bad to do (e.g. get in a car wreck, break a window, get pregnant, whatever)

Never permitted to make little digs at each other, no making fun, teasing, etc. Whatever went on outside the house, family members were about love and respect.

Homeschooled and taught how to think logically, taking intiative on work and learning.

I'm 22 and just got married and got a fourth promotion in a very large corporate setting, so whatever I learned at home has served me well in the real world.

[edit] Oh yeah, and I worked for my dad in high school, at his now-defunct recruiting business.

parents divorced when i was around 3-4. raised by a single mother who worked long hours and weekends which forced me to learn to take care of myself at a young age. she was pretty strict and i got spanked for my wrongdoings. but i think truly learned responsibility in my early teens when i stopped getting gifts and had to work for what i wanted. also the leniency started in middle school when i really had no set curfew or anything like that. best advice given to me by my mom: "only worry about one person: yourself".

now that im older with a good job and a place to live, its more joking around and good times.

I haven't had a very good life. My mother cheated on my father when I was about 1 year old, and they separated. My father got custody of me. When I was about 5 he got busted for felony drug charges. During those few years I was shuffled from family member to family member. When my father got out of prison he started a lawn business. He made decent bank, but never really had time for me. Most of his money was spent on drugs though.

I got my first job when I was about 11 years old, and I've been working ever since. I bought my own clothes, food, everything. My father rented a room that we shared until I was 18.

I was never beat. I was never yelled at. I was just kind of ignored.

I hated sleeping in the same room as my father. Hated it! By the time I was 14 I was squatting at friend?s places. There parents didn?t really mind because they knew my situation.

I?m still happy my father got custody of me. After years of not speaking to my mother I saw her at my aunt?s funeral. I gave her my cell number, and she called me. Apparently she?s ?trickin? (prostituting herself) down in FL.

My father gave me one piece of advice when I was young; he said ?don?t be like me?. That seems to be my guiding star. I went to Rutgers for 1.5 semesters, but it was too expensive for me. I came back to South Jersey. I will finish up community college this summer with an A.S. in math. I?m going to transfer to a different school and try to finish up my bachelors. So far I'm 5k in debt from student loans, but I suspect the next 2 years it will rack up.

my mom took me to work all the time, and usually I would sit at my mom's desk while she was seeing patients, or at the nurses station when she was working at the clinic. she never made me work, although I'd sometimes do filing there. Since we had a small family, everytime we'd go out would be a family night. she really never needed to spank or hit me that I can remember.
