They work. My grandpa has a ranch and a guy came out to dig for a well and used dowsing rods to find water.
They don't work.

That's true. But some opinions are backed by empirical evidence, as opposed to anecdotes and superstition.Opinions are like butt holes everyone's got one.
I just said I had evidence my grandpa had a guy use willow to find water to dig a well. Plus the guy I quoted said he used diving rods and they worked.

You are confusing anecdotes with evidence. If your standard of evidence is that low, you're going to have to accept
Reflexology
Astrology
Homeopathy
Magnets!
Tarot cards
Psychics of every flavor
Do you accept all of the above? The evidence for them is essentially the same as that for dowsing.
Tarot cards work my aunt and sister read them. Trust me they work... My aunt told me about things in my life that was true and she said my parents would be buying a house and it happened. Most people can't do it right it takes meditation, etc to know how to do it right and she only did it for close friends and relatives.
Psychics are kinda hit and miss some don't know anything and some are damn good I dealt with two who were damn good! If you don't believe me then look at the "evidence" where psychics helped law enforcement to solve crimes. Ever watch John Edward or the Long Island Medium?
Let me just tell you that I knew one that was able to access my password protected laptop just by me thinking of the password.

It's like being in the Twilight Zone. Unless you experience yourself you won't know and other people will say your full of it and won't believe you. It's like ghosts or aliens once you seen it you will be a believer, but to others they won't believe you. Gotta have an open mind man.
When she guessed my password she had to have her hands on the laptop and I had to think of it. Psychis like to touch things. I don't know what it is they must get a felling or something just from touching an object.

Try drilling for water and not hitting it.

People say they don't work, however ive seen them work first hand on farms a few times with no records of underground pipes(we checked with the city first) and the rods were over 90% accurate, and the guy using them had no way to find out before hand where the pipes were as we called him and he showed up a few hours later and we were in the field the whole time so no chance for him to bring in underground sonar or anything.
Hard to disbelieve something you have seen work flawlessly with your own eyes.
There isn't any real such thing as psychic ability. If anyone feels that they are genuinely psychic, there's a million dollar prize waiting for them.
Friend of my family used to own a contracting and excavating company, he's in his 70s now. They did a lot of everything, but specialized in utility stuff for decades, water mains, electrical lines, gas lines, and all that. How accurate do you think someone experienced or even not in working with underground pipes would be just making best guesses? 90%? Did you keep a running tally of that?

He could survey any parcel of land on foot and just tell you the most likely locations of things like water mains and gas lines would have been placed, if they were there, with a pretty good success rate. He could even "see" tell-tale signs of prior construction or excavation that anyone else (including lesser experienced equipment operators) just thought was a natural feature of the land, or whatever.
No magic involved. Just a lot of experience, extensive knowledge of the practices in the region, and things like code or regs. e.g. where a prior contractor might have decided against placing a water main or gas line, or have re-routed it, due to some feature of the land, even though it departed from the plan. He was even familiar with antiquated practices that may have been customary 50 years prior but nobody did anymore due to regulations or whatever.
you see this kind of thing an all fields, a master craftsman or whatever who seems to have a 6th sense through his extensive knowledge and experience. There's nothing magical about it.
honestly I think divining rods just got started as an inside joke on the new guys, kind of like how older carpenters will ask the newbie for the lefthand screwdriver or a spare bubble for the bubble level or some other silly thing.
the joke just got a little out of hand.

Since then, I have chosen unknown areas, worn blind folds, avoided indications which could initiate preconception and tested the system time and again so that now I can say without any hesitation: Divining rods DO work.
Divining rods DO work. For years, I have used a couple of pieces of bent wire coat hanger to find underground pipes and conduits. Many times, I have found buried services which have not been located by sophisticated equipment or have been wrongly indicated on drawings. It does not seem to matter what the pipe material or content is. It does not seem to matter if I am wearing rubber-soled shoes or other footware with electrical insulating properties. It does not seem to matter if a trench was dug and, after consideration, the pipe was laid elsewhere and the trench was backfilled. It does not matter if the work was completed fifty years ago. My theory is that the dessicated material at the surface of the earth has, by natural process, been laid in a general orientation with the magnetic poles. In addition, the atmosphere is mainly composed of ionized gases. The dessicated materials, sea water and other surface materials are mostly ionized compounds and, as such, are like little magnets. So, you could illustrate this phenomonum by drawing lines parallel to longitudinal lines on the earth's surface. The lines will deviate from the parallel, due to the deviation of the earth's magnetic field, as shown on marine charts. The ionized compounds in the atmosphere, adjacent to the ground will orient themselves roughly parallel to the lines of longitude. If you then dig a trench, you will disturb this natural rythm and cause an electromagnetic potential, in the soil, from one side of the trench to the other. In reaction, the immediately adjacent atmospheric compounds must reorient themselves to align with this anomaly. The human body is polarized. There are quite strong differences in polarity between one side and the other. When you walk across a disturbance while holding a bent rod in each hand, the abrupt interaction between your polarity and the disturbed properties of the air and soil adjacent to the backfilled trench causes the rods to turn. Ususlly the rods consistently turn towards each other but, in some cases, consistently turn away from each other. I am a retired Professional Engineer and I would have no hesitation in demonstrating the effectiveness of this technique to any of the sceptics. So, while I know it does not work for some, it will for most. Initially, when I witnessed someone using this technique, I was derisive. I soon became a convert. Since then, I have chosen unknown areas, worn blind folds, avoided indications which could initiate preconception and tested the system time and again so that now I can say without any hesitation: Divining rods DO work.
