How do I burn a DivX file that is 740 megs to a CD?

I tried Nero and an 80 min CD and it reports that there is not enough space on the blank for the writing process. Now I assume that when people make 2 CD DivX files they break them up so they fit on 2 CDs (I am new to this so bear with me). Nero reports the file as 741 megs and I am sure people are putting this file on CD somewhere, I just don;'t know how. Can I overburn the CD? I have 2 Plextor 12X drives and a Lite-On 24X drive to choose from for the burning process. Is there some other burning program I should use? I have CDRWin 3.8 and 4.0. The file is an AVI file, and I heard somewhere that if you trick the CD into thinking your file is Audio you can get motre on the CD but I don't remember where I read that or how to do it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I don't know how to do it but I think you want to trick the CD-R to write it in VCD-mode instead of the usual mode. Then you don't use any error correction so you get a couple of extra MB (around 40) to play with.

With Nero, try recording as CD-ROM(ISO) and on the "ISO" tab of your "Write-CD" dialogue window, select Mode 2/XA. Mode 2 ditches the error-checking that is built into the normal data format and gives you more space for data.

Just make sure you change it back when you make your next data CD

If you can shorten the file, like removing movie credits at the end or some intro frames at the beginning, use Virtualdub. Open the video, mark what you want the file length to be, use direct stream process for audio and video, and then save segmented .avi.

I tried VirtualDub and it seems that althought the file says it is a DivX and has the .avi extension in seems to be an mpeg because that is the import filter that VD uses to open it. I am trying to use VD to reconnect the two files of about 750 megs apiece and then split them into 500 meg files and use 3 CDs but since the file does not appear to be an avi file I don't know what to do now. Any suggestions?

Oops, does that mean all the data CDs that I have burnt so far are "unreliable" at best?

The file is still too big using Mode 2/XA under Nero. Does anyone know of a good program for connecting the two files back together when they are mpeg files instead of avi? I would really like to just stitch these back together and make them into 3 CDs.

That's weird. You should be able to fit 800MB on an 80min CD in Mode 2. That's the same format CD audio and VCD uses.

I think you can use TMPGEnc to splice and cut MPEGs.

...Are you triying to overburn?!?
You can do that if your recorder allows it, just use the DAO method!
In Nero there's an advanced preference that will allow you to overburn a CD with DAO... I've used it recently without any
problems... with a good burner!

if you own the dvd why don't you just reincode it to fit on a cd or two

90-99minute cds are sold.

that's the best way, IMO. no need to overburn.

well, whoever did it just didn't care about anyone else and assumed you had easy access to 800-900MB cd's. If VDub opens using an mpeg filter, then tmpgenc would be your best bet. When you open up the program, go to file, mpeg tools. In the last tab, load up the file, select, click edit... and there you can edit what you need.
Altho, if it IS an mpeg, it's probably a VCD.... in that case, burn it as a VCD in nero (up to 800MB)... and that should solve your problem.

You cannot burn a standard Windows ISO/Joliet filesystem onto a CD using Mode 2. AVI's are objects of that file system. Despite what Nero says, you can't burn more than 702MB.

To burn an 800MB AVI file onto a CD as Mode 2, and therefore making it fit, you have to use XCD or some other virtual container format which transcends the limits of the standard Windows filesystem.

Remember that 700 MB is not 700,000,000 bytes. It is actually 734,003,200 bytes (1,048,576 bytes per MB) or 716,800 KB (1024 bytes per KB). To the casual computer user it may look like you can burn 734 or 716 MB per disk, but that is not the case.
