How do I clean my laptop screen/display?

Hi, I have a Toshiba p770 laptop and slowly the screen is getting dirty. I just looked in the pdf manual and on google, yahoo, bing, youtube, and anandtech and can't find a mention of cleaning laptop screens.

So if you have experience with this or maybe better any links to places where they have instructions please put it here.

This screen is a 1600x900 with what looks like a think plastic layer protecting the actual lcd surface.

I usually use standard LCD cleaning fluid and lint free cloths, or a soft cotton rag (like a cut up t-shirt) to clean the screen on my laptop. Which reminds me, I haven't done that in a while...

I use Walmart eye glass cleaner with a clean cotton t-shirt washed with no fabric softner. It works great on my glasses, laptop LCD screens and glossy laptop lids. I use it all the time to clean laptops that I work on. I usually wipe off those laptops with anti-bacterial wipes before I use the eyeglass cleaner. Some people give me really nasty laptops to work on. I have to clean the spittle off before I work on them.

Soft cotton rag damp with the hottest water the tap has to offer, softly applied.

LCD/TV screen cleaners, eyeglass solutions etc are all based on Iso-propyl Alcohol sometimes with added coloring agents to make it look "special". About a $1 or $2 for large bottle of 91% at any Pharmacy. "Rubbing Alcohol" is usually 70% but may contains other stuff, best stick with the 91%.

My old Toshiba 1415-s115 had a 15.6" LCD and I found interesting instructions for it which were to use Pure isopropyl alcohol diluted with about 30% distilled water and use it with cotton balls. I kind of did a quick brain calculation and thought, sounds like 70% isopropyl alcohol to me and that is what I used. I believe if I hadn't gone like 6 years before cleaning it it would have been a breeze, but it took time but did come out pretty nice.

The thing no one here has yet hit on is that the screen I have now is different. As I mentioned it has a plastic layer now which seems to protect the actual LCD surface. I tried some tap water and cotton balls and it seemed to be working quite well but it was night time and not the best to tell. I'll retry during the next few days when it's day time and see what it looks like.

I was quite uncomfortable touching my old laptop's LCD in any way at any time but this one (A Toshiba P770) I feel quite comfortable as long as I am gentle.

Microfiber lens cleaning cloth and rubbing alcohol. Maybe multiple passes, wipe it off, rinse out the cloth, wring out the cloth, and wipe again.

What do you people get on your screens??? I don't touch mine and the residue from a sneeze here or there cleans with water on a paper towel and then buff with a microfiber.

Some people just have to touch their screens with fingers. So, fingerprints and sneeze spots are probably the most common splotches. And, don't forget rug rats.

I typically get dust on my screens for the most part, which as others have mentioned is easily cleaned off with a microfiber cloth. For fingerprints and stuff, eyeglass lens cleaner and the microfiber cloth works wonders.

i have non-glossy screen in my laptop. if it's only dirt, i just use soft cloth, if it has smears/food, i use cloth wetted in warm water and squeezed out

I live beside a freeway off ramp and the dust and petroleum vapors are constant along with sneezing. The clear water and cotton balls did do a nice job but I'll be looking to get more microfiber and some lens cleaner. I let like 9 months go by before I cleaned it the 1st time so it was pretty bad.
