For the video I could do DVI -> HDMI. But what about audio? I thought I had heard that some video cards output sound over HDMI as well?

Mine does, you have to go to the sound properties and change the audio out to HDMI.

So if I had a Radeon 48xx with HDMI out it would be listed as an option in Vista under Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback?

ask here..... Audio/Video & Home Theater

Not sure if video cards with HDMI output also pass the audio thru the card/hdmi cable. Maybe the best way is to get the audio thru the S/PDIF (if your mobo has it) and connect it to a amp that has that kind of input.

Yes, and set default to Digital Output Device [HDMI].

That is in Vista, I'm pretty sure XP is about the same.

As soon as you plug in the 4850 or 4870, you will notice Vista installing audio drivers for it. If you click on the little speaker icon in the system tray, you can select "ATI HD Audio Device" or something to that effect, to have the audio output by the graphics card along HDMI. Then all you need to do is plug it in with a HDMI cable!
