i recently upgraded my os from win98 to winxp, but i want to do a clean install of xp. when i had win98, i would just reboot in msdos and do "format c:", then install win98. i don't seem to be able to do that win winxp so how do i do it?
You can do what you are trying to do. (Heck, I've done it enough times....trying to figure out a hardware problem
Use you Win98 startup disk...format like you did before....
After you format...change your BIOS so you can boot from the cd drive. Then install windows XP.
Most people just format from the Windows XP cd. However, I still do it using the Win98 disk.....when I tried formatting using the XP cd I got errors when i tried to install.
One of the first things you will get is a menu asking you what partition you want to install it on. That screen will also have instructions on it for deleting and partitioning space, as well as formatting.
Thank's AT'ers. Just did a clean install, and am installing all my old proggies again.
Set your Boot Drive as your CD-Rom (Obviously), then when you restart it, it'll ask you which drive to install XP and all that good stuff, and before that will give you the option to format the drive. Pretty self explanatory once you get there.
m1ke101: I was having trouble accomplishing a clean install of XP until I read a post by renorocks in a previous thread. It explained/clarified exactly what to expect and look for. Check his 1st post. link:

Go into your BIOS and set your CD as the first boot drive, then, with the WinXP CD in the drive, reboot your rig, you should get a blue screen then just follow the onscreen instructions, they'll give you a choice of deleting, keeping, or just formatting the partition/Drive you want to install to.
