I don't think anyone ever said that you CAN'T get 6G speed form a regular old sata cable... and there have been many tests before the posted link on the previous page that showed it is possible. Not to mention the ten's of thousands that do it daily.

The thing that many overlook.. or simply don't have personal experience with.. is that the sheilding and POTENTIAL issues are certianly higher if you bend the hell out of an old 3G cable and expect it to never give issue or lose a few MB/s of speed over a newer 6G cable.

I can read all the reviews and listen to all the self-proclaimed experts I want.. but they will NEVER supercede what I've witnessed firsthand and helped others troubleshoot MANY times for problematic SSD installs. I've even consistently tested a few MB's losses with regular old HDD.. and that certianly wouldn't be the best cable for my 8 HDD array as it would just pull the whole works down to the level of that weaker cables throughput.

I'm not saying that this particular case would warrant the use of a newer cable because it appears that the OP simply found the Marvell 9128 chip's inherent limitation, is all. There are other ways to tweak that chip and it's not as bad as some think it is if implemented correctly.

But personally speaking.. it seems quite silly to dump thousands into any system and then use the cheapest chinese lead coated cables that I can find, or even accept the corner cutting profit bearing bundled crap that comes with some.. if not most.. hardware. These bits and pieces are where they cut corners and assuming otherwise seems pretty niave, IMHO.

Then again.. maybe some audiophiles out there don't care about using premium cabling for their $4,000 surround systems. I know I sure do.. but everyone seems to have their own standard and I guess your system sounds good enough from my house. lol

Here's my crappy Marvell 9128 running my crappy Vector.

And my crappy 9128 running my crappy Vertex 3.

PS. I will never use an internal cable for any of my systems.. HDD or otherwise. Externally shielded premium 6G is the only way I roll these days.

So after putting the SSD onto the marvell 6G controller port, my speeds are actually slower! Only Sequential is slightly higher, but everything else is significantly slower.

Is it just the marvel controller being somewhat crappy?

The Intel 3 Gb/s ports are faster for random i/o than the Marvell (think I already said that the Marvell won't be as good). When I was in the same position and the Marvell was the only 6 Gb/s ports I had, I went with the Intel port for the faster random i/o.

In addition, I don't believe the Marvell chip or drivers support TRIM, so your performance will drop over time more so than wit hthe Intel, which does support TRIM.

Appreciate your input! I'll mess w/ it more (between the 3G and 6G ports), but I'm guessing I won't notice too much difference between either one.

You're in the same club I'm in. Finally got around to getting SSDs then realizing the x58 platform sucks ass because of this whole Marvell sata3 fiasco. Kinda not worth upgrading the platform for real sata3 ports. I had two more 512GB SSDs being shipped when I discovered this BS.

I have gotten 550mbps before. I canceled test before the write part, cuz I dont care about write,,,..

M4 is champion for raw seq read speed. Thank you. and IMO a more stable SSD then Samsung 840 hoe I mean Pro,, thx gl

You will because Marvell does not support TRIM.

One way you may try to overcome this is to over-provision. Another ways is to periodically use the Samsung Magician "Performance Optimization". This tool basically forces a TRIM on all of the free space on the drive,

To get those shiny, impressive benchmark numbers, you would indeed need a newer platform. The question would be, assuming all other factors of your system are acceptable for the things you do, is it worth it? Though you may not be getting maximum performance, you likely wouldn't "feel" a difference in real world usage. Your "handicapped" system is worlds ahead of mechanical drive performance. I'd drink a beer and try to forget.

just joined, but this topic got me interested in.. because I was thinking about upgrading to 840 Pro for my system but unsure if its newer 6 GBps SATA or not... .. my system specs are HP Pavilion Elite HPE 180-T I know its got i7 because there sticker on the tower case... anyways if someone can inform me a 840 Pro SSD would be a good buy for this system or not..

edit: currently I have 2x 500 GB set up in RAID 0... so I would be going with 2 SSD's to replace this and will likely to stay with RAID 0 setup.

That's what I'm thinking too! heh.

My system is a few years old:

i7 930 @ 3.80 Ghz
12GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5850
1 TB Samsung SATA HDD.

So I definitely agree that the Samsung SSD 840 Pro will blow the HDD out of the water, even if my marvell controller isn't the best. I'll probably just leave it as is.

I appreciate everyone's input/advice.

There are no differences between SATA cables. The SATA revision is purely an interface and controller spec. If you have a cable that wasn't giving you full speed until you switched it out for one labelled as a higher spec, then the cable you had was just defective.

To get higher performance, you would need to upgrade to a newer platform.

Words to live by. On X58 in my experience the ICH10-R runs circles around the Marvell controller in most benchmarks and in pretty much all real-world usage. I'd forget about the Marvell controller, disable it in BIOS, and just enjoy the Intel ICH10-R until you decide to upgrade.

The marvel controller has some strange behavior to say the least. Mine has a tendency to drop my samsung dvdrw from time to time.

Is the ICH10-R just the SATA 3G ports?
