How do I get profitable ads on my website?

Okay, so I think I have a pretty cool idea for a website. It's nothing too special, nothing Web 2.0 that will get a giant user following and get bought by Google, but it should attract some buzz and get a good amount of visitors. Its probably a few notches above milliondollarhomepage; i.e. there is a little bit of a gimmick factor to it. Anyway, I'm going to depend on ad revenue, how do i go about this? I been looking at google ads, affilite programs, and the such. Learning about pay per click, CPM, and so on, but haven't been able to put it all together. Where should I start? Some affilite programs require a minimum page views (which i don't have since it hasn't launched). Plus I dont get the need for a minimum, a thousand views is a thousand views no matter it take a day or a month. I'm looking to maximize my ad revenue here obviously. The plan would probably be a pop-under, a banner, and a few boxes. Any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks,
-C

You won't get a dime until get thousands of visitos every day. Don't expect profit for at least a year, even if your site is the tits.

Why? If this catches on I dont see why it couldn't achieve a few thousand unique visitors a day within a few months. Even so, isn't there any ads programs that grow with the site? I dont see why i can't put ads on my site and if nobody goes to my site, so be it, the advertisers dont have to pay me. Seems like a no-loss situation for advertisers. I just want to know the options that are out there and what people recommend.

Because people aren't going to pay you for adspace unless they know it's a proven investment, and pay per impression usually is measured by the thousand impressions or so and pay per click is less likely to be achieved.

No matter how big you think your site can be, unless you've already got things written out, people won't keep coming back unless you have fresh content, and people won't tell their friends about it unless it's really just too awesome to pass up.

Establishing a userbase is a lot harder than you think.

This is just the sort of thing i'm not understanding. Why do they have to pay upfront? Aren't there any ads companies where I could say, "Once I get you your thousand clicks, pay me." Are there any ad affiliates that work especially with new sites? I'm new at this, any links or guides or advice would be helpful. I've heard it might be helpful to put up a coming soon website until it lauches and collect emails to show advertisers the level of interest.

I realize this. I think i have a very unique idea that could possible get some free media buzz and alot of attention. Its not just a scam so i can get ad revenue. People will want to come to this site.

They don't pay upfront... and that's the problem. You end up busting your balls to meet their ad requirements, only to find you fall short of any goal requirements they have because they are absurd.

Google Adsense is really the only current affilate network that is not shady or requires a $100 balance before they pay out or something.

I've found that the best way to succeed is to make the site then integrate ads when it starts to be worth YOUR time and YOUR bandwidth to do so. Making a few cents a week isn't worth giving someone free advertising. That's all most affilate programs look for. They'll let anyone be part of their network as long as they know they have no chance of meeting their payout requirements before they give up or the site goes under.

I've looked into Adsense, the only problem is the nature of the website means a large demographic, it will appeal to a large number of people, I hope I'm under the impression Adsense works best when you can match it with your content, which would be hard to do with what I have in mind.

How do I go about this? Launch the site and if it happens to take off have a place where advertisers contant ME? Join a ad network and then move up to bigger networks if it happens to take off?

Okay, if the site happens to take off, I can switch to a large, proven network like Burst Media, Tribal Fusion, or just sell my own ad space. But for now, while its growing, what advertisement opprotunities are best?

Adsense tailors itself to your content.
