How much wood could a woodpecker peck.....

Wait. Wrong creature.

When I was a little kid, I had a recording of Woody Woodpecker singing "What kind of wood would a woodpecker peck if a woodpecker would peck wooooood." It was on an old vinyl 78 recording. It was a pretty color record too, not a black one. (red? blue? I can't remember.)

Heeeeeeeee'd peck hardwood softwood redwood dogwood, cottonwood plywood hickory beech. Rosewood Teakwood candlewood and sandlewood walnut hazzlenut apple and peach. Innn-nnnn oaktrees, elm trees, fir trees pine trees, pear trees, shoe trees, telephone poles. Barn doors, benches, table tops and fences. A wood pecker would peck a peck of little holes!

OP: the woodpecker is a symptom. You're asking the wrong question. He's not after "old" bees nests. He's getting LIVE bees & their larvae. They don't peck holes for the hell of it. You probably have a carpenter bee problem. You should be thanking the woodpecker for discovering this problem for you. You NEED to address the BEE problem, not the woodpecker problem.

I've learned from cartoons that you DO NOT try to get rid of a woodpecker. DON'T DO IT!

Haha yes if you have them pecking at your house you need to have a PCO check for wood boring insects. Chances are there is probably significant damage already and the flicker is the least of your problem!

Well, there you have it. A peck. Or 8 dry quarts. Op you'd better shoot it.

Did you remember that or have to google it?

Guaranteed to work, but may not legal in all areas (woodpecker is endangered bird)

1): Buy a spring type Rat Trap
2): Mount trap near where woodpecker is most active on house.
3): Bait trap with Suet (pork fat .. most meat shops have it)
4): Get rid of dead woodpecker.

You should also check for other damage as noted above, just in case.

Had a neighbor utilize this solution.

Having a huge rat trap affixed to the siding was a great conversation starter.

This ^

Nature will probably supply more woodpeckers whether or not you poach the one you have now. Don't assume the guy/gal from extermination services are not asshats, they probably are, do kill those bugs though.

I have seen the hanging mylar tape strips work. The same chemical used for artificial grape flavor (in sodas) is also a good bird repellent (forgot what its called though). The best solution would be aluminum siding though.

woodpeckers are a sign of a wood problem. If your tree/house has woodpeckers, your tree/house has problems.

I had this problem many moons ago the first winter after I moved into my newly constructed home. Sitting in the LR one Saturday morning I heard the little ah heck. I went outside to investigate, and on the gable end of the house the woodpecker had put in about 20 holes. They were perfectly horizontal and about exactly 1" apart. It looked like they had been CNC'd they were that accurate.

Not having any firearms at the time, I went to the hardware store to get a slingshot. This was rather bizarre in and of itself, my having never used a slingshot in my life. The hardware store dude asked what I needed it for and when I told him, he got all jiggy telling me it was illegal to kill a woodpecker. I ignored him.

I got home and within a day the woodpecker was back. I got the ol' slingshot out and after about 20 misses, he squawked, flew off and never returned.

I think I just got lucky - as did the woodpecker.

Does the OP live in a tree house?

Actually that does not sound like a bad idea if one has to actually spend lots of time over land.

As a little kid, I must have listened to the records 1000 times. That was my favorite song on the records. It was a two record set, 78 rpm. It was a whole Woody Woodpecker talent show, with different characters doing different types of songs. Yep, I remembered that song well. It came with a book that you read along with.

edit: Wow, only about $25 on ebay. Hmmmmm....

They aren't always going after insects in the walls, I've got one that pecked a hole on the wall near where I had a wall clock hanging on the inside. It mistook the ticking for a bug sound. The bastard pecked a 4" diameter hole in the siding.

If you had AMD, you wouldn't have had that problem.

I was told they do it (make noise), when they aren't actually getting insects, just to impress females.
