Spoiled buttermilk spilled on the carpet.. now it stinks pretty bad. Yesterday night I poured liquid detergent over the area.. smell was gone, but I woke up to the same fucking stink this morning. It is a relatively small area.. about 1 sq. ft.. but the stink turns my stomach pretty bad. Don't feel like going back home.

Any ideas?

Don't let milk spoil.

They have cleaners specifically for organic messes, try one of them.

It sounds like it may have soaked thru to the backing/padding of your carpet. If that is the case, the best thing to do is rent a rug doctor and steam clean your carpet. You'll need something hot enough to really break up all the nasties on your backing, and enough suction power to try and clean the backing/padding as good as possible.

I used to clean carpets for a living, and trust me.. it may look like a sq. ft. on the surface, but once it hits that padding.. it turns into 3 sq. ft. and then some

Any idea how much it might cost? I think I'll speak to my landlord about this.. she might know someone who can clean it.

TBH, I always cleaned my own carpets on off time from work. They allowed me to drive home after hours and clean my house for free. I am not sure on the pricing of a rug doctor, I am sorry The MAIN thing is to get it cleaned right away, before it can do some permanent damage to your carpet. Spoiled milk is nothing to mess around with, and although it stinks something fierce, you MUST clean it ASAP.

Edit: Try looking in your local yellow pages under carpet, and check the prices of local professional carpet cleaners. In a lot of cases, they will do something like a "3-room deal" for the price it would cost you to rent a rug-doctor. In any situation like this, it's always best to hire a professional, since the equipment they use is industrial and has a LOT more cleaning/suction power than anything a consumer could purchase/rent.

WTF were you doing with spoiled buttermilk?

I was trying to dump it in my trash when it spilled all over the place. I managed to clean it asap, but there was a lot more left behind the trash can which I missed. Happened yesterday morning.

Why not just throw the whole container away? Why is your garbage can in a carpeted area?

Come on, what really happened?

In this case ,I agree, use a professional to clean the rug. They know what to do, what to use, how to do it and will likely provide some sort of guarantee that they will take care of the issue. If you rent a machine, while it may be capable of doing the work, you may not know what cleaning fluid / powder to use to get rid of a stain or odor.

 At my old job, we always guaranteed our work. If a stain/smell ever came back, we would come out at no additional charge and re-hit the affected area.

Vinegar. Clean the area with vinegar and then leave an open cup of vinegar in the room for a few days to take care of any remaining odor.

Soaks up the smell of curry and cat placenta like magic!

Carton of buttermilk into the trashcan. I was being dumb.. as I had to catch a bus pretty soon. It was really a disaster.. I thought of dumping the trash in our main dumpster outside of our apartment and then proceed to the bus stop.
