I was trying to drag a window over to another workspace but missclicked and it created this gray area next to the systray:

I can't figure out how to get rid of it. If I go to panel settings normally there would be a way to remove stuff, but that one has no option to remove. I can't move it around either, it's just stuck there. Any way to get rid of this?

OS is Linux Mint 17.1 KDE.

I just get options to add/remove widgets, remove panel (the whole panel) etc. It seems it's not being recognized as an actual item and there is no option to remove it like other items. Did not reboot yet as I have too much stuff open, but worse case I'll try that. Speaking of rebooting, every time I reboot the workplace switcher is always screwed up, and I have to play around with the settings till it goes back in the proper position. Basically it shifts up inside the panel so I can only see the bottom two workspaces.

I'm not that familiar with kde. I tried it on my xfce machine at work, and think I customized it a bit too far. I added something to the panel, and kde wouldn't fully load anymore :^D I play with it off and on, and was removing some stuff this Friday, but I need to logout to see if it did anything. I'd be pissed if it was my primary desktop, but as it is, I'm only mildly irritated. Not a good impression though. It might be easier to figure out if I was accustomed to qt programs, but I've pretty much always used gtk, and better know where stuff is.

It also looks like KDE4, which is discontinued upstream. Even if it is a bug, it won't get fixed.

Is that not the representation of your workspace? If you open windows, do little boxes representing those windows appear in the square? Or is that the little 4 box thing to the left? If it is not, then I'd be stumped as to what that is.

Maybe i'll tinker with Linux mint KDE, i have it on a disk already. See if i can figure it out.

Yeah I messed with it a bit today, used my Mint 17.1 KDE disk I made a while back. I booted up the live environment, and this box was not present, and I could not figure out for the life of me what it was or how to get it to show up. So this is still a mystery it seems.

I had it happen again but got it to go away. Now I recall exactly what happened. In windows you can drag a file to an area in the task bar to make that window open so you can drag the file in that window. In Linux however, it makes that grey spot show up, and you can't back out once you started to drag. In Windows you can usually back out by right clicking. But if you move around the task bar eventually the grey area just goes away and the file gets dragged to your desktop instead.
