Whether your first job out of college will suck or not is probably not going be determined by what you know, but WHO you know. Internships, pair or not, is a great way to network with people in the field who can get your name out there.

Check with your campus's Alumni association. I'm sure they'll know of people you can reach out to.

I got my first internship (paid) on my 3rd semester of university. Of course at that point in my life I already had a lot of work experience under my belt for someone of my age which probably helped quite a bit.

look for on-campus positions, go look for research positions, ask your professors for any leads, go to career fair, etc.

it's not that hard.

Topic. I'm a freshman in college, going for an Information Systems major, and currently have no A+ certifications or any of that, and didn't have any jobs in HS, with the exception of telemarketer which I quit in 3 days. I don't want to work in retail or fast food.

Now, the reason I want to avoid working at fast food or retail is because I don't want to constantly have to put up with people yelling at me because they can't stack coupons or whatever other reasons.

So, could I just wait till third year, get an internship, and use that as job experience or would I need prior job experience prior to that?

And am I way behind on getting ready for my career resume wise?

I think it's time to be an adult. Everyone has had jobs they didn't like. So get over yourself and go get some work experience.

More and more people seem to think everyone else is going to just hand them things.

In conclusion, suck it up and go get a job if you want work experience.

Allow me to summarise:
"I am lazy and have never worked, but don't want to start at the bottom."

Ok, so i guess I need to swallow my pride, get some thicker skin, and learn to deal with grouches.

My town has a few retail stores, a JC Penny's, an AT&T store, a Sprint store, a Verizon store, a Walmart, a K-mart, and a couple of home improvement stores.

Would I have a chance at any of those during the summer?

Just go to a temp agency. You'll have to start at the bottom, but it's an easy way to get into an office job.

I'm sort of in the same position, I went straight into post grad after undergrad so I've never had a "career" type real job. And now with a year and a half of no work because of University, it's become a real hassle.

You can always fluff your resume as well. As long as you can back up what you put on your resume then no one will know the difference. Just don't put friends as references.

Yep.

My first job was working in a factory. Good experience actually.

My second job was in a software developer position.

Are you really 18? Holy shit, the thought of not having a job until you are 21 is actually an option that is going through your mind? You don't want to work someplace that you might get yelled at?

I think my brain just exploded. Nope, I'm still typing...must be an aneurysm ready to blow.

If I was going through a resume where somebody's first experience in the workplace is an internship at the age of 21, I wouldn't even almost give that person consideration.

Good shot at any of those, bigger chance at the big retail stores. I'd apply at all of them if I were you and hope to get into AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon and hope to get one of those.....but apply to all.

Even crap jobs will give you great work place experience that will relate to any career field you want to eventually get into.
