i just put in 3 maxtor 160gb's. one is a master, the other two are slaves. i'm running windows xp...how do i get these drives up and going?

edit: one of the drives shows up in the Device Manager and then 1 more shows up and says it has a 'problem' - device cannot load because a duplicate device is already in the system

To use the full amount (160gigs) you will need an ATA133 controller, I believe.

Yeah to use 120gigs of them you will probably have to download Maxblast software to format them. I really don't know why fdisk is giving you such freaky info. What does bios see them as?

..................edit.................
But if it was me, missing 120 gigs total would make me break down and buy a ATA133 controller board.

<< one is a master, the other two are slaves >>

Please tell me that you have:

IDE 0: (unkown drive:master), 160gb (slave)
IDE 1: 160gb (master), 160gb (slave)

and not:

IDE 0: 160gb (master), 160gb (slave)
IDE 1: 160gb (SLAVE?).

or even worse:

IDE 0: 160gb, (master), 160gb (slave), 160gb (slave) (a 3 device IDE cable?!?!?)

If it is the first situation, which drive is it that is not found?

Yeah Wolfsraider is right, I forgot about that. I stopped using Maxblast awhile ago because I kept getting volume size information errors if I did.

edit: looks like I'm just repeating what scootin said. but since it's the truth, i'll leave my post in here as well!

<< i just put in 3 maxtor 160gb's. one is a master, the other two are slaves. i'm running windows xp...how do i get these drives up and going? >>

I didn't know that Windows XP made it possible to have two slave drives without two master drives!

<< edit: one of the drives shows up in the Device Manager and then 1 more shows up and says it has a 'problem' - device cannot load because a duplicate device is already in the system >>

This right here tells you you've got a problem with the jumber configs. It sees all three drives, but two of them are trying to load up as slave drives. That's not possible, you can't daisy chain IDE like you can SCSI. Try setting it up as one drive on one chanel as master, and the other two drives on another chanel as master/slave. See how that works for ya.

Did you try using the Maxblast disk that came with these drives? Sometimes that works better than FDisk, sometimes not.

If that doesn't work, your best bet would be to pick up an ata133 card (mine came with my 80G maxtor drive). Pop that sucker in there, let the os find it, reboot and put the drives on there. Golden.

i tried the ME version of Fdisk and it gave me weird numbers and symbols like %

i downloaded the maxblast software (the drives were OEM) and it finds all teh drives and has the right max size but won't let me make a partition larger than 8032MB and when i try to do that it times out and quits

This is from Maxtor's site: I guess its not necessarily 120gigs, but it looks like 137.

[/i]Due to limitations in Windows and many types of system BIOS, partitioning and formatting drives larger than 137 Gigabytes without proper driver or controller support WILL CAUSE DATA LOSS when storing data to the drive beyond the 137 GB Barrier.

In order for you system to recognize more than a 137 GB perform one of the following recommended solutions:

1. If you have a motherboard that has a Intel chipset (810, 810E, 810E2, 815, 815, 815E, 815EP, 815P, 820, 820E, 830M, 830MP, 830MG, 840, 845, 850, or 860) please visit www.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa/ and download the Intel Application Accelerator. Intel's Application Accelerator supports the full capacity of drives larger than 137 GB.

2. If you do not have a motherboard that has a Intel chipset then it is recommended to purchase a Ultra ATA 133 PCI card that supports 48 bit Logical Block Addressing (LBA). You can purchase the Maxtor Ultra ATA 133 PCI Card at www.maxtordirect.com which supports drives that are larger than 137 GB.

If you did not follow one of the above steps and you are trying to go by other means of "tweaking" the system to recognize the drive past 137 GB please note, if your ATA controller, chipset drivers and/or system BIOS do not properly support 48-bit Logical Block Addressing, DATA LOSS WILL OCCUR when storing data to the drive beyond the 137 GB barrier.[/i]

fdisk 98 or older will limit the drives to less than 45 gigs, ata 100 will limit you to 127 gigs total, i believe
so getting an ata 133 card is good advice
also formating them as stated above you will need either wd ezbios or a windows me or newer version of fdisk to get above the 4o gig limit

even partition magic won't go above 80 gigs the wd ezbios goes to 120 gigs but since3 that's as high as i went not sure about 160?

sorry not to much help here

I was looking around and noticed that the new Maxblast Plus from their website and found this for the Maxblast software : Windows '95, '95B, 98, NT, Me, 2000 compatible. It didn't specifically say one way or the other about XP (but its safe to assume 2000 compatible to be XP compatible most of the time).

If you're in XP, go to System Management=>Disk Management, and you should see all disks that are present in the system, even unformatted ones. Then just select the disk and format it through there. If you can't find the Disk Management utility just go to WinXP Help and search for "Disk Management." It'll bring up an article that links to the disk management util. (I'd tell you directly, but I'm at a Win2K machine now, not my home machine, which is XP) It should format right within the OS. I just did it like this when I installed my Seagate 80GB drive. BTW...what do you plan on using over half a TB of storage for?

I would guess that to be correct.......... With the drivers for the card, you should get the full capacity.
