hi

i recently got the following system which i want to overclock:

P4 3.06
Supermicro 4saa mobo (granite bay chipset)
1 gig pc 3200 kingston ram
ati all in wonder 9700 pro
audigy 2
maxtor hd

all runing on win XP home, sp1, and all updates done.

i have been doing a little reading and browsing and whatnot, and decided to back everything up and see if i can overclock it, but i dont seem to be able to for some reason

in my bios, i have the following options for overclocking the cpu:

voltage adjustment in 0.025 incriments
clock speed from 100 to 165, its on default at 133 now
spread spectrum which goes in 0.25% incriments.

the manual also shows a CPU CLock Ratio option, however, that one is missing from my bios, its simply not there.

i do not fully understand the overclocking process, however, if i raise the CPU clock option by about 5 points, nothing seems to happen, none of the monitoring utilities that i have tried (and i tried many), pick up any changes in the CPU.

if i go a little further, the system simply halts on boot and wont even boot up, just sits there with a cursor blinking.

i do not know if i am supposed to raise voltage along with the clock speed, if so by how much and at what ratio ?

and what about the CPU clock ratio thing which i seem to be missing ? is that a necessity ? if it is what can i do to get it ? it is in the manual so i presume i should be able to do something to make it appear in bios, but i checked ALL jumpers and everything else 10 times over and cant find anything that would affect this.

here is a link to the mobo specs [http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/E7205/P4SAA.htm]http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/E7205/P4SAA.htm]http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/E7205/P4SAA.htm[/L][/L] , i also have all the latest drivers, bioses, etc. the comp is compeltely up to date.

another question i had, is there an actual formula for optimum voltage/clock speed for the P4 CPUs ? is it the same for AMDs ?

thanks to anyone that can help.

time to pimp de guide one more time

the clock ratio won't show up unless you have an engineering sample p4 which allows the manipulation of the clock ratio (aka clock multiplier)

all you can do is raise the cpu freq and when it crashes/doesnt POST/bootup, raise vcore a bit
if it still doesnt work, raise it again by a bit
highest you want to go is 1.65v ACTUAL (meaning ifyou monitor the voltage in windows or even bios hardware monitor, it should say 1.65ish volts...sometimes someboards will overvolt, sometimes they will undervolt...so just be careful not to go over 1.65v...i know 1.7v is critical cuz after that you get a dead cpu within a month most of the time, but i think its beter to be under critical voltage lol...)

make sure you fix the pci/agp freq to 33/66 mhz respectively before you go about this

i dunno if that motherboard is anygood for overclocking though...
but it should give you at least some overclock, so you can get a bit more than what you paid for

theres a few appz in the guide you should download and make use of

//edit

what power supply do you have?
disable spread specturm (or put it to 0%)

Disable spread spectrum.

even if that board does not have a PCI/AGP lock (which I am unsure of) you should still be able to push it to around 145 FSB without going over 1.6V actual on the CPU.

thanks, i will check out that guide.

the power supply brand is PCMCIS, i dont know if its any good, its 350 watts and came with the case. i do have a really sweet heatsink and fan for the CPU + another heat exhaust system on top of that blowing heat out and up, and i'm actually runing it in open case anyways. might just mount a 3rd loose fan if i need it to blow away all the excess heat.

cause i got a pretty much kick butt system and it scores freagin low on 3d mark 2003.

best i have been able to get on max performance settings on everything (vid, sound, etc.) was 5018 i think, while when i did online 3d mark 2003 comparisons i saw someone actually break the 8k mark and most had a range of 7200-7800.

when i looked further at their systems i found out that they were all overclocked, some guys was even listed as a CPU operating speed at 4+ gigs, 3.4-3.9 were often.

i figured i will give my CPU a similar boost (at least to the ~3.4), and bump my vid card a bit too and optimize audio a little more and see what happens.

BTW, which is betetr to run for me for AGP aparature size the 64 or the 128 setting ? i understand more or less what they do, but cant seem to decide.

Lou, would that be your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 100th 3.06..?

I always see your threads about different processors it makes me dizzy! Don't get me wrong - I'm jealous is all it is. hehe.

My particular 3.06 seems to top out at 3.49.

hmmm, ok

i got it to run at about same, ~ 3.3 and 3.4 GHz, however i cannot get it to run stable even if i overclock it only one notch, i'm 100% sure its not a heat problem since my cooling setup is good. but basically, now i cant even run 3d mark 2003 at all, it runs the 1st test then just quits to desktop without any messages or anything, just shuts itself down. same for most 3d applications, although some still run ok the ones that have older engines it seems.

and of course, i still want to know, how in hell did those people that have reported CPU speeds at 3.7-3.9+ GHz achieve it ? like i said before, i even saw one system that ran at reported CPU speed 4 GHz+ on the 3D Mark 2003 web comparison database.

so any other advice ?

You can get up to 4 if you use a thermoelectric cooler. Don't know that you can get past 3.5 without having some active cooling.

My 3dMark03 is 4400 with an ATI 9700pro and p4@3.06....all running at stock.

im having the same problems...p4 3.06, asus p4g8x-d, radeon 9700 pro

evidently there were some issues with granite bays and 9700 pro's, supposedly you can fix it by

- going from 256 > 128 apeture
- disable write combining
- turn fast writes off

as far as OCing goes i havent had much luck past 148 FSB, running 66/33 AGP/PCI, 1.55V vCore, 1.6V AGP, 2.5V DDR, By SPD 2-2-2-6

im new to this whole OCing thing too...was increasing my FSB only and once it got to 153 it kept rebooting randomly in 3dmark01, increased vCore to 1.65V and it didnt help any

temps on MBM5 show 28C mobo, 51C cpu after running a cycle of 3dmark01, but the cpu temp in mbm5 is 5C higher than in the BIOS..so actually 46C
