I have figured out how to solve a problem with the new xinput driver Microsoft keeps trying to install on my Win10 system, but I am looking for a more permanent solution. I have an XBOX One Wireless adapter for Windows so that my sons can use XBOne controllers on the PC. It worked just fine up until MS installed KB3140743, a cumulative Win10 update. Included in that package was an updated xinputhid.sys driver for the xbox controller. Unfortunately, it causes all sorts of problems. As soon as my sons are done playing, they close the game and the mouse starts beeping whenever you move or click it. You cannot use it to click on anything. Using the keyboard, if I go into Device Manager, I can see a yellow ! in Human Interface Devices - Xinput compatible HID device.
When I reboot, all is working again until someone uses the XBOX One controller. So once I figured out it was the new driver, I uninstalled that KB and used the MS Hide and Show tool to prevent it from being reinstalled automatically. That worked until the next cumulative update, KB3140768 once again installed the bad driver. I did the same thing, but am expecting that the next cumulative update I will be forced to block it as well.
Does anyone know how to install the old working driver, and prevent future cumulative updates from updating it? I have found that the broken driver is dated Feb 22 2016, and has a version number of 10.0.10586.122. The older working driver is dated Oct 29 2015 and has a version number of 10.0.10586.0. I have tried to use the Device Manager - Update Driver option, but Win10 is never happy. I even copied the 2015 version along with the *.INF file over to a temp dir, and tried to force that to install via "Let me pick...". But that didn't work, Win10 just responds that it can't install it. I then, after uninstalling the KB, tried to set the 2015 driver as READ ONLY using an attrib +R command, but Win10 wouldn't let me even when I opened the CMD window as admin (access denied).
Not sure what else I can try, any ideas?
*** I've googled this problem, it seems pretty widespread. TenForums and Reddit both have long threads about it, Reddit even offers a much older driver as a solution packaged in a CAB file. I would rather get this Oct 29 2015 driver back in place without being forced to restore it every couple of weeks.
