My son had a PS3 up for sale on our local craigslist and after receiving very similar emails from different addresses we were sent a check for almost $2000, from an address in Va. but the check was from the "Oregon state treasury ". These buffoons UPS overnight-ed that obviously bogus check along with printed off instructions to contact yet another person for further directions.

I googled the address in Va. and it is a house that is listed for sale.

What would be the best course of action to put a splinter up their behind? Local or state police, take the check to the bank, let craigslist handle it? (CL probably won't do diddly)

I realize these scumbags probably have their bases covered but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

EDIT: I didn't fall for it and send them the PS3, I would just like to see this dirtball stopped so he doesn't eventually screw somebody over.

Yeah if you still have the console just throw away the check and find a legit buyer. I hope you didn't ship it off somewhere. Only deal locally and face-to-face on Craigslist.

No, we didn't fall for it of course, but I would like to see this scumbag busted for trying to deceive people. (forgery for a bogus check?) My wife just got the express envelope UPS yesterday so it is still fresh yet.

Local cops, Postal police (federal mail fraud)

Odds are though, they'd never find them.

The envelope was sent UPS express, the USPS was not involved, and I kind of thought that too, (they'll never find em)

String them along. Waste their money. Make scamming less profitable for them. Send them a message of "you forgot to sign the check. Do you want me to return this one & you sign it, or do you want me to destroy this one and you send a new one?"

The check is computer generated with my wife's name and address on it, there is no handwriting on it at all, the signature looks like it was from a stamp but printed on (it is pixelated from the printer)

edit: the funny part of this check is that is claims to have "Invisible Fluorescent Fibers" as a security feature, and "absence of this feature may indicate alteration".

You can still tell them it wasn't signed.

How did they get your wife's name and address on the check? Did you send them your personal info?

i actually have good / valid checks that still have an old address of mine.

the account + money in it is all you need to verify

I would have done money order only and say, sorry bud, but can't do check

This is obviously a scam they are trying to pull on me, they want us to cash the 2000.00 check and send them the PS3 and the remaining money, this kind of scam has been around for a very long time.

ohhh boy.

Tip#2: Never give out home address before you get to talk to them.

Tip#3: Meet at public locations whenever possible.

I usually don't give out my home address unless I am selling large furniture or something that is difficult to transport to public places. Also, if the dude/lady sound shady on the phone I just turn them down, or tell them to call me back when they have thought it through.

Be extra cautious of suspicious mail or phone calls on your wife's cell. Don't give out anymore private info man.

file a report, it will land on some detectives desk and believe it or not, it might actually tie into a bigger problem then you think.

You may never hear about it though, but at some point what you provide might give the local prosecutor that edge against the organized crime in your area or across the nation

Boomer congrats your the first from all these numb fucks ^^ above you to actually read the OP. People here have a fucking egg when someone does not put a ' in the correct place. Yet the same self righteous pricks will not read the full OP because they lack the attention span of gnat. They are all answering "I hope you did not send the PS3" and similar shit when he did not ask that. Holy Hell it pisses me when people do not read the OP.
