How do I proceed next? Scammer sent us an obviously bogus check.

My son had a PS3 up for sale on our local craigslist and after receiving very similar emails from different addresses we were sent a check for almost $2000, from an address in Va. but the check was from the "Oregon state treasury ". These buffoons UPS overnight-ed that obviously bogus check along with printed off instructions to contact yet another person for further directions.

I googled the address in Va. and it is a house that is listed for sale.

What would be the best course of action to put a splinter up their behind? Local or state police, take the check to the bank, let craigslist handle it? (CL probably won't do diddly)

I realize these scumbags probably have their bases covered but any suggestions would be appreciated.

EDIT: I didn't fall for it and send them the PS3, I would just like to see this dirtball stopped so he doesn't eventually screw somebody over.

Make a cardboard PS3, then send it back with the check saying "Thank you for your purchase of a fake PS3 with your fake check. I hope you fake enjoy it."

This is a lot different than just going after a random CL scam...the OP was targetted.

I got scammed once from a local transaction back in 1996 or so from USENET.

They were buying my Mitsubishi 37" TV for cheap, never even used it. Had the legendary Corian top.

The guy came up in some beater car and was presenting himself as the owner of a small jeweler on the Island of Palm Beach. Brought an ink jet printed check from a local major bank.

My wife had our 140lb Akita sitting and I told her don't go anywhere until I get back (I wanted her to make the bank phone call, but she bitched about it).

Anyway the bank told me that check was no good...by the time I got back my wife was out walking the dog around the neighborhood and I just saw the two asshats running away with my TV.

Fucking bitch had my car keys and hers on her.

We divorced that next year. Fortunately I was reimbursed from my homeowner's insurance.

necro is short for necrophilia, fucking dead people.

Its use here refers to the fact that eternalone bumped this thread almost exactly a year after it was first posted to trick people into responding to it like a new thread. As you can see, it worked. IIRC, thread necros are against the rules, so you may see this thread locked now.
