How do I remove carpet stains?

I'm moving into a new apartment soon and I need to clean up some of the stains on this carpet. What can I get that is readily availible to clean the carpet?

I dont want to rent one of those stain removing vaccum cleaners, I'm just looking for some type of solvent that I can scrub the carpet with.

Any help would be fantastic!

I have a carpet and upholstry cleaner from Meguire's that did the trick at my old place. Its in the automotive section at any dept / hardware store, and it works wonders are carpet.

Not in this situation. I'm under college housing living with 3 roomies. I'm moving out and they do inspections upon moveout. I need this carpet looking good or they will bill me.

Btw, saw the thread about a page back reguarding the Rug Doctor, I would rather not rent one of those.

but yea meguiars makes some good products, it wouldn't surprise me if they had a carpet cleaner that was quality.
my roommates also use a carpet cleaning product, i'll try to figure it out once at home

depends on what color of carpet. when we moved out of our old house, which had cream colored carpet, my wife mixed bleach in with the water in the carpet cleaner. That made the carpet look nice and new.

Not sure how long it lasted after we were out of there, though

Just got back from Target with Oxi Clean. We shall see how it goes.

Buy the Bissel Stain Remover. The best stuff in the market. Much better than that Oxyclean crap.

The Bissel product won't leave a discoloration on the carpet like other carpet removers.

You could become a devil customer and head to best buy to purchase a steam cleaner. Once you are done using it return it. I dont support this action but I've seen it happen far too many times

Actually Bissel has an Oxyclean product they call OxyKIC.

I had very good luck cleaning up pet stains from a dog that soiled some carpeting.

I must have tried ten different carpet cleaning products and OxyKIC worked the best.

UPDATE: Been trying OxiClean and it sucks. It isn't removing the stains worth a damn. So I was looking through some stain removers we had in the laundry room and found a can of 'Spot Shot' carpet stain remover. This stuff rocks! It removes stains better than anything I have tried. Only one problem though, I ran out! There was only like 1/4 can to begin with and I am no where near close to removing all of the stains. I have no clue how old the stuff is and if I can even find it again. Oh well, I will try.

they sell this stuff at hoomedepot called chem-dry, works similar to what you were using. Resolve and other manufacturers also make similar chem-dry type cleaners that can be bought at regular stores.

oxyclean works for me.
Oxyclean and bleach :thumbsup:
It works great on my beige carpet. I got a nasty coke stain out with it.

Why should the landlord take care of it? He didn't ruin it. It really depends on the stain and carpet type/color. We had some off white carpet at our last apartment and had to rent a rug doctor when we moved. Looked brand new when we were done and only cost $30.

doesnt it fall under normal wear and tear?
carpets arent exactly known for staying pristine if they are subject to any significant traffic.

Stains aren't wear and tear. In most cases there will be a clause in the lease that states the carpets must be cleaned by a professional before leaving.

What sort of stain is it? Since, cleaning paint or even mud is much difference than spilled drinks. As for stuff to use, I want to say the name of the product was resolve but I'm not sure (it came in a quart container or so, and was powder that you brushed into the carpet); I had great results with it. After a cleaning or two, even the nastiest stains were in retreat.
