need to simulate a server crash (on a spare computer, without IT's knowledge) to see how long it takes IT to respond. What would be the best way to do that?

Something that's easy on my part, makes the computer unusable, and is easy to explain to IT (ie, why it happened)

put a shortcut in the startup menu that points to a batch file. In the batch file put in the command to restart the computer. The computer will loop endlessly.

JuiceBox and Mo0o have it right.

But I would go with JuiceBox's idea.... Registry stuff just means they will reformat & reinstall, but the other one could be fixed easier.

Wouldn't a simple power failure type of scenerio work..
.. lets say.. Unplug the server while its running...
Unexpected shutdowns are always havic, and are not really rare

Not so much a crash, but just uncheck the "TCP/IP" under the internet protocols on the network adapter.

Won't crash the server, but it'll make for a serious head scratching for a bit. The server will still turn on and work, but won't function over the network.

Really easy to do/undo.

Anyway, I deleted about half the registry. After it was done, I couldn't do anything. Double clikcing on icons did nothing, but double-clicking on My Computer brought up the Map Network Drive wizard

anyway, I restarted and now I can't get into windows at all.

Now lets see how IT will do. I called them and told them the computer needs an urgent full restore from the nightly backups they do.

Should be interesting....more fun though if you made it loop a continous irregular order like ....all your base are belong to us. Lol I bet that would confuse some of them.

BAHAHAH!

Seriously, I'm about 5 more repairs from setting her laptop up to re-Ghost itself on boot.
Don't tell her I said this, but she's almost as bad as her mother (God rest her PC).

Anyway, OP: did you make a copy of the Registry first, or do you not need this system to ever work again w/o reimage/rebuild? Let us know how fast they respond.
