How do I tell if my CPU or Mobo are dead?

Hey,

just bought a new rig.. and the computer powers up but doesnt send anything to the monitor.. I know for sure that the GFX card works.. so my question is...
how do I know if my CPU is dead? or if my mobo is dead? there PC speaker doesnt even beep... and the Epox LED shows FF (which means either CPU screwed up or mobo)
is this a sign of mobo death?

Have you opened up the case and made sure the speaker is actually connected? Before you assume anything is dead you should try reseating the video card and RAM and clearing the CMOS.

You have to explain your situation a bit clearer. You didn't even say if it was a homebuild, half a home build or a complete system that you decided to tinker with and fuxored up.

How do you know the monitor is still good? If you can try another one before going any further.

you can try testing the chip in a working machine or try testing a known working chip in the mobo. i would also switch psu's to see if it might be a faulty power supply. also try taking out the mobo and reinstalling making sure its grounded properly. try switching out ram with non-high density compatible ram. try and rule out possibilities. good luck.

Chipset: Speaker is connected fine. Tried both ways and still nothing works. Reseated the Vid card, RAM and cleared the CMOS... same thing.

veryape: monitor works 100%. The system is homebuilt.. I bought all the parts and put them together...

Anyway.. some more info
Athlon XP 1600
Epox 8KHA+
256mb Crucial pc2100
Generic PSU 300W

I read on amdmb.com forums that some other guy had the exact some problem as me... If the CPU is burned totally.. wouldn't it smell or change colour or something?
