this is how I did mine

Mark,
This letter is to give formal notice of my resignation. My last day with L-3 Communications will be October 19th, 2007. Please let me know if you need any further information.

Thank you,

Keep it simple. Just state that you are resigning and provide the effective date. If you are not comfortable with giving the reason for leaving, don't provide it in the letter. You should first tell the manager, then give him your written notice. And don't burn bridges, as they say. If you liked working there, you can include comments like

Dear John,

I regret to inform you of my resignation from [Company] effective November 1, 2007. I have enjoyed working with the [Company] team, but wish to pursue an incredible opportunity that has arisen . . .

Yup. To the point is the best way because you never know how some comments will be taken by people unless it's pretty hard to interpret things badly.

Is a written letter always necessary for a professional position? What if you don't write one and you just tell your boss you're quiting in 2 weeks?

In my opinion, a written letter is always best. When I quit my last job (cable company) because of a move, I gave a verbal notice and they told me to put it on paper so they could have it in my file.

Toekramps is good though. Just replace his name with yours, the company name, and date. Leave it at that.

Note that if you are giving 1 or 2 weeks notice in your resignation letter that they may retain the option to let you go immediately.

It's not necessary, but remember, you're in a professional business/work environment thus giving a letter or resignation is always a good way of continuing the professionalism.

Thank you,

Sounds good. No reason to explain yourself. Just make people aware and try not to leave people hanging.
