I'm probably lower-middle class in the amount that I pay myself, but I'm sure I could afford a trip if I planned ahead. I could save up 7500-10,000 for the trip if given a years time. I'm not sure what a trip like that is supposed to cost, but that should take care of it I think. I'm not talking about staying a month either. There's no way I could be away from my business that long anyway. I don't drink, so that wouldn't be part of my spending.
The wife and I both spent 10 days in France this past May. I believe for both of us with all meals, lodging, train tickets, tours, plane tickets, museum tickets, etc, it was around $6000 give or take $500. We did not stay in hostels (don't listen to that advice unless you're a teenager or a college student) but didn't stay at top-of-the-line hotels either. IMO, it was pretty reasonable.
While you may not drink alcohol, the cost difference between beer/wine and soft drinks in places like France is miniscule. I think a beer was generally around 4.7 euro and a Coke was around 4.3 euro IIRC.
