I learned to swim when I was my son's age...maybe earlier than that actually. He's 7 now.

Stereotype = Black people can't swim. I've seen a black man almost drown because he was on a boat and fell off.... If you get on a boat, you should know how to swim.

I can swim well.

same as someone who never learned to ride a bike. or like someone who's never walked gaining the ability...they'd fall on their face.

in fact, why didn't you just ask this question in the jumping jack thread?

A guy I know, someone I run with on occasion, does not know how to swim and he is 47 years old.

When he was a kid his Dad kept throwing him in the water, telling him to swim, but not helping him at all and it traumatized him for life. He even gets nervous around pools.

Anyone that doesn't know how to swim should take lessons at a YMCA or something. It can really make the difference between living and dying.

Swimming is I dunno... like walking. One arm in front of the other, don't forget to breath. I mean really? You don't even need your legs. Alternatively, you can just use your legs... and don't forget to breath in (air, not water)... Better yet, use both are you legs and arms go move through the water like dolphin wooo.

I can't swim. When I jump into a pool and try to float on my back, I sink like a rock.

Meh. when I was in basic we had 4 people in my company that had to take swimming lessons. They were all black. I think it was much more relevant that they were inner city.

Ive often wondered who the hell would join the USN when they didn't know how to swim.

That's like asking "How is it that people don't know how to walk?" Nobody is born with that knowledge. Babies don't know how to walk and have to learn.

Swimming is similar. It's not hard, but still something you need to know how to do, and once you do it's pretty much done without any thought.

My father threw me off a boat, it was smooth after I learned to dog paddle.

When people say they don't know how to swim, I assume that means that they can't even tread water? I never really understood this either. Riding a bike isn't really the same because it requires learning how to balance it. All you have to do to tread water is basically kick your legs, or try to push the water down with your hands.

Why? I mean, I live in CA and I know how to swim, but this makes no sense. Should people in Los Angeles be concerned about accidentally falling into the ocean?

I can't swim. When I jump into a pool and try to float on my back, I sink like a rock.

floating requires blubber (if desiring to float without any additional movement), or a technique of creating upward motion with your hands.

I require the latter for I am without blubber.

As for swimming - I took to water like a fish.
And I almost drowned once. Didn't scare me of the water one bit. Made me respect it, that's all. Bottom water only like a foot or so beneath my kicking feet so I kept kicking off the bottom and in the process of screaming for mom, ingested a lot of water. Puked when I got back to the beach.

That taught me not to push my limits by swimming to deeper water when it was one of my first times swimming without my little floaties.

Adults, honestly come on now. While the idea of little inflatable things on your arms may sound ridiculous, and I don't recommend going that route - it is not hard to find somewhere with a recreational pool that is shallow and just give yourself time. Like all other basic activities, it is essentially instinctual but obviously it takes time to hone the skill in regards to muscle motion/repetition.

Not knowing how to swim is asking for death the first and only time an accident happens and you are surrounded by deep water. Most other things like learning a ride a bike aren't going to result in death as you won't ever accidentally find yourself on a bike.

Many places offer swimming lessons. And like I said, if you don't want a lesson, it just takes throwing yourself into a safe learning environment - a shallow pool. Start swimming... and if you start sinking, just stand up.

If you've ever taken a small dog and held it just above the surface of a pool, it instinctively begins the dog paddle motion. Humans don't have this instinct.

Consider it similar to the footage of Iraqi/Afghani soldiers trying to do jumping jacks for the first time.

I think too people tend to panic if they're not used to the water. I think more than learning the mechanics of swimming its more learning not to be afraid.
