If your name is Kevin and you say KEY-vin instead of KEH-vin (an example from my extended family), it's up to you because it's your name. People who pronounce it differently are just shitheads.

Fixed.

It's cool, you're fine- this other guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Unless we're speaking Ancient Greek, your pronunciation is correct. If we're speaking English, the word, whether you're referring to the shoe company or the Greek goddess, is pronounced the way you've always done it.

Actually, the OED doesn't even list his pronunciation as an alternate pronunciation, and neither does MW. I listed the Ancient Greek pronunciation, the English pronunciation, and his pronunciation, or the correct pronunciation, the good enough pronunciation, and his atrocity of a wrong pronunciation, respectively. Damn, I love other people being wrong.

The ignorance in this thread is appalling. to you for knowing the origins of the name and where to find an authoritative pronunciation.

Nike.

Anybody who says it any other way is a 'tard, lol..

Edit: Come to think of it, I have heard it said "Mike", but I always just considered it like a shortened version or something..

Yeah, aren't you clever? You did an awesome job of proving me wrong when I was so fervently defending my pronunciation as the "correct" one. Oh wait, no I wasn't. Dumbass.

I don't even know what the hell you were trying to argue. Purely that I'm stupid for pronouncing it the way I do? Wow, good one.

The second one. I don't give a shit what the proper pronunciation is.

Actually the first one isn't the proper pronunciation, the proper pronunciation is "NEE-keh", the modern English pronunciation is "NAI-kee", and your pathetic excuse for a pronunciation is not even in the running. It looks like you're doubly removed into egregious dumbassery.

I'd take offense, but negative commentary on my pronunciation doesn't mean anything to me when it comes from a yank.

I think anyone who gives a shit how someone else pronounces the name of a brand of shoe is a dumbass.

and yet the American pronunciation of English is closer to Shakespeare's English than the modern British pronunciation.

Same with Sega. (As in Mega Drive, or whatever you idiots call it. Genesis I think.)

We say Sega, you say Saga.

Define 'we' and 'you'. I'm in the US and have never heard Saga for Sega.

Who gets to define the pronunciation: the CEO or the shareholders?

it means "victory." it's what the dude shouted before he keeled over after running the "first marathon"

hence the name adopted by the american shoe and apparel company.

first pronunciation is the only pronunciation. only mouth-breathing collar-poppers would pronounce it any other way.

no, the pronunciation is determined by the greeks. it's an ancient word. it's been pronounced one way for eons, and it will continue to be pronounced that way.

it was nice of the shoe company to retain the real pronunciation, but they aren't the ones who choose how to pronounce a word that is more than 2 thousand years old....

G damn...now I'm sounding like St Michael....shudder....
