Every month of so, the 1TB drive also gets offloaded to a 1TB eSATA drive, which is kept offsite. I have 700GB or so of data to backup and it takes around 2.5 hours over eSATA.

Thanks for the suggestion on SyncToy. I tried using the ACDSync in ACDSee but it would not work for me. There is a new MS app called mesh but when i installed it did not work and somehow broke my video drivers.

Reading this synctoy it sounds great since photographers gave a lot of input.

Man you guys must be camera happy. We have 10 years worth of photos and no where near 3 GB of space taken up for that.

Get a DSLR camera and shoot in RAW mode, 10MB or more a file, mine at 10MB and I only have a 6megapixel camera. Then use Bracket mode which takes 3 pictures instead of one, over and under exposing the shot in case your settings are not perfect. Then convert your files to highest quality JPEG at ~5MB a file. I have had a DSLR for only a few years but every vacation the amount of shots grow. I have over 120GB of images in RAW and JPEG. Granted I do not need all of them in JPEG.

Now I am going to get an HD camcorder for my expected baby, I think the camera files will be dwarfed in size compared to video.

Take it from someone that's witnessed the birth of his children, you do not want to see it again in HD.

I think my problem is I collect data like baseball cards...

I would use smaller drives but why buy a 250 gig when for $30 more you can have a 1TB

The only thing that ever took up so much space was TV shows I downloaded. But now that you can find box sets for most shows on sale for $20 I tossed all my burned DVD's out.

I just can't fathom what some of you guys are storing.

I basically backup not because I really need to (I have nothing super critical on my HD's I would die over if it got lost), but because of the time it would take to replace all of it. It took me hours to rip all of my CD's to a nice high bitrate format with proper tags. Sure, if I lose the mp3's I could just re-rip them, but I'd rather not go through it again. $100 is easily worth the several hours of time saved.
