I want to change the "default" home page. I know how to add a "current" home page..... but I need to get rid of a "dafualt" page that is very persistent.

Thanks.

It's hard to believe this was asked on these forums. Ever tried just looking through the menus? Pretty simple really. There aren't many config menus in IE.

No........ that does not change the "DEFAULT" home page..... it only adds another home page to "current" list.

I am working on a family members computer......... and one of the kids visited a site that has taken control of the logon home page. A real sob of a site called www.sureseeker.com. As soon as you enter in a new home page and close the browser...... it reverts back to this site.

I need to actually change the "DEFAULT" home page setting. Not just add another home page.

sounds like the kids might have installed program that is forcing the homepage to load. you need to uninstall that program to fix this problem then you can go to interenet options and apply new homepage.

i used to work for a company that did this also. the way they did it was to run a program when you started windows that will make the homepage stay the same even if you try to change it. they way to disable this was to use msconfig, go to startup tab, uncheck the program.

It's really F**King pissing me off! It must be a program loading it.
I have startup cop.... and can't find anything that looks out of place.
Really weird.
Wonder if they also installed a spyware. It actually routes you through their server then takes you to wherever you want to go.
Thanks for the input.

I'm not sure if this will stick, but fire up regedit and look for

Hkey Local Machine > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Main

In there is a key called Default_Page_URL. It might work.

It's in, you guessed it, the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Default_Page_URL

Amazing what a search will find.

Hmmmmmmm I'll look in the reg.

It is definitely a program that is loading at startup and forcing the browser to go through their server.

Thanks for the ideas.

There does not appear to be any unusual programs loading in the startup.
Must be a hidden program or something.

It is routing through www.gohip.com and www.sureseeker.com

Found a url startup in the registry (buried)... that was showing the culprit.

BUT.... it is re-editing the registry on startup now. I will keep searching the registry for other links to that site...... any other ideas?

i have a shortcut to IE5 with the target like this:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

it bypasses your home page when opened. also opens faster than about:blank.

My suggestion would be to flame the hell out of the website. What they are doing is realy quite unethical

It might not fix the problem, but it will make you feel better

This sounds like a serious problem here! They have done something very dodgey to your computer and it is possible to sue them for it, but not recommended. The only thing I can think of it the Registry holding something out of the ordinary. I think that it has hidden it in one of the hidden files. I mean you can have files which are hidden until yout ype a command to launch it. It will not show normally. Thats the only place else they could hide it I think?!

Good luck sorting it out!

Albert.

Man this is really bad :|:|

Is what they are doing legal? i mean it seems almost impossible to take that home page off. heck even MS cant do that. Just imagine if MS made changing the default page that hard.

Wow.....

This is pretty bad..

They have been routing all of my sisters web activity through their website. It appears they have captured all of their passwords, credit card information, and I think even snapshots of their computer.

This has got to be illegal.

So far I have found that it appears to be part of "sureseeker.com", and perhaps a program called "jet"?

I will let ya know what else I find.

Thanks for the post(s) guys.

Damn...i put my foot in the mouth. I see you had some spy ware loading crap. Look in the add/remove programs and look for anything that looks suspect maybe? or Close all programs...except explorer...launch IE and see what other programs pop up in the task manager.
