How do you clean your glasses?

I got glasses recently and now my glasses are getting dirty. I think I should clean them, but I'm afraid of just putting it under the tap and use soap to clean it like what's mentioned in this site: http://www.ehow.com/how_12526_clean-eyeglasses.html

One of the reason why I'm nervous to follow those instructions is because I'm afraid it'll remove the coating that Nikon put on my lenses. They weren't cheap and I would hate to fuck them up because of my ignorance. Also, is it safe to use a damp tissue paper to wipe the lenses? I was told that tissue paper are not an issue when it's wet as it's not abrasive in its dry form. Any comments?

I use my shirt. When it's time for deep cleaning, I scrub them with a toothbrush under running hot water.

I don't have glasses but I clean my sunglasses with the spray that they gave me at Sunglass hut, and a lint free cloth.

The cloth for glasses is always a better way, but not the most convenient
unfortunately, the effect comes around 5 years later, when my multi-coat layer starts to peel off

good thing is, we normally change our glasses by then

Glass or plastic lenses?

The following is primarily for plastic lenses, but also good advice for glass...

First rule of cleaning glasses...NEVER wipe them off while they're dry. ALWAYS use water of eyeglasses cleaner. Dry wiping can/will scratch the lenses. Wiping them with tissue paper or paper towels can also scratch the lenses...remember, both products are just wood fiber.

I almost always wash my glasses with hot water and a dab of bar soap or liquid soap, then dry them either with a clean terry cloth towel, or a microfiber eyeglass cleaning cloth.

I had my last pair of glasses nearly 5 years, and even though I broke the frame twice.:| the lenses were nearly scratch-free...and not a single "noticable" scratch at all.

Since you're so concerned about the proper way to clean these lenses, what does Nikon recommend?

distilled water + vinegar . The same thing I use for windows, mirrors, etc. Tap water will leave spots

Even a damp tissue paper will scratch? I don't have the Nikon packaging anymore so I'm not sure.

Same, until I got smart and had LASIK done. Still clean my off the shelf sunglasses that way though. Not worried about scratching them, they aren't going to last 2 years, let alone 5.

With a cotton t-shirt, typically.

Gets the job done, depending on the material and how it was washed.

Every once in a while, i bring them into the shower with me and use the pressure to blast the crud off the nose pieces.

I use the supplied microfibre cloth to clean the lenses otherwise, and a shirt once I get lazy and don't give a shit anymore if I scratch them.

any good eyedoctor should have those special microfiber/woven cloths meant specifically for that purpose. Anything else will scratch your lenses over time.

Glasses cleaning solution from glasses store and cheesecloth from glasses store.

Costs no more than $10 and I assume they know what they're doing.

Of course, this being ATOT, the concept of actually contacting Nikon for cleaning recommendations is too wierd...

soap and water, once or twice a month (aka: as needed; I don't wear my glasses every day) and then dry them off with a towel.
