How do you connect two computers via the internet?

Ok guys, I think i know how it's done, but I have a friend that i'm trying to send a file to him via hotmail and it's too big. I would like for him to be able to connect directly to my cpu and d/l the prog. OR me connect to his computer and copy it to his hard drive. If this is an ftp action how do what do i have to do to (settings/file sharing?) get it working?

Is there a way i can connect directly to his comuter, and manipulate it like i was sitting in front of it via graphical interface? Some sort of "remote" program he can install?

You could setup an FTP server like FTP Serv-U and then have him connect to your computer via cuteFTP and then have him download the file from you. The FTP server is very easy to setup and comes with a lengthy Readme file just in case you are confused

To control his computer remotely you could use PCAnywhere. I've personally never used it before but it looks to be a fairly easy program to setup and run. Install the program on both computers, set one as host and the other as the client and you're free to do whatever you want

Thanks, i'll give them a shot...I was wondering if I was missing something Just couldn't get it working.

you can enable file sharing if you have windows, but you will be susceptible to very extensive hacking even if you think you are safe, trust me. another way is to use VNC, which is made by AT&T and some other ppl, and it's free, and it's good. Other than that, you could use any trojan or backdoor proggie like back orifice 2000. I think VNC is the easiest to use and free, so I would recommmend that. Still, to transfer using VNC, you would have to set up some kind of ftp on your friend's comp in your case since it sounds like he doesn't have any programs. I don't think you can drag and drop in VNC. You could probably help him install ICQ or Windows File Sharing (turn it off after you are done) via VNC and then transfer using ICQ or access his computer through Windows Explorer

Don't know if it's good to connect directly to your CPU?

Naaaa... just kidding. But you must connect a 12Volts Car battery to your processor or else it won't work.

If you have AOL (gasp!) Instant Messenger or ICQ, you can transfer it to him through that. Much easier than setting up FTP, and more secure.

Or you could use one of these free space sites on the net like:
xdrive.com, freedrive.com, driveway.com, fatdrive.com, freediskspace.com, idrive.com.
Don't remeber how much they offer, but it's around 50-300Megs I think.

Thanks everyone, i appreciate the info and i'll be giving these suggestions a try! He's a newby to computers so if i can i'd like to set up a program where i'll be able to troubleshoot on his cpu and fix any &quot;minor&quot; screw ups that happen...as you can tell, i'm also learning in this field...and the more I learn, the more I know i soulda never started messing around w/these things called a computer!
