How do you create bandwith? Where does it come from?

I understand how there are T1 lines and T3 lines and OC3 lines, but how does one create bandwith? I'm really confused, where does all of this bandwith come from?

It comes from cables and network equipment.

cat5 cable: 100mbps (does gigabit use cat5? i dunno)
Anyway, if one cat 5 cable and 2 NICs makes a 100mbit connection, then 10 Cat5 cables makes a 1gbit connection.

100 cat5 cables and 200 NICs: 10gbit connection.

That's too many cables, so they come up with better technolgies that use fiber optics to transfer data faster than cables can.

1 cable is now 10gbit.
10 cables: 100gbit.

The more cables and routers and switches, etc, the more bandwidth you can create.

Here's an analogy for you. Let's say you have a water pipe. The bigger the radius and stronger the pipe the more water can flow through it at any given time. Well that's kinda of like bandwidth. There are a lot more technicalities though.

well that's not really what i meant, what i mean is where does all this speed and information come from? I know that our ISPs have T1's and T3's and that's what we get our information from, but where do the T1's and T3's get their information from, where does it all start is what i mean

T1's, T3's, etc. are leased lines - They run from one point to another. You can get a T1 to connect two office buildings in a city, you can get a T1 to connect to an ISP that in turn connects to the internet through their upstream providers.

The internet is like an upside down tree - Data travels up the structure until it reaches a point where it can route to it's destination, then it travels back down to the destination & vice versa.

Bandwidth is simply a measurement of the thickness of the branch at the point you're at.

its like this,

you have say a 100Kb page, or ~100000 bits of either 0 or 1. You ask the ATOT web server to send you it, so they do. It goes from the telcos backbone to your exchange at say 622Mbps or 100000/622000000 = 2/10000 of a second. Then down your 500kbps line so 100000/500000 = 0.2 seconds. This pages fills your exchanges data capacity/ bandwidth for about 2/10000 of a second and fills your connections capacity/ bandwidth for about 0.2 seconds. It gets buffered in RAM at the DSL head end at the exchange until the page has been fed into your DSL line.

i get it

quest and whoever else have laid fibre across the world, and literally your cable or babybell plugs itself into these providers. so a web server in denver may be connected via a T1 line to the local telephone exchange which is connected to networks like quest and global crossings, its the same at your cable tv station end where they plug into the backbone, and connect to your house.
