Kill something small and furry.

...or you could treat yourself to a movie, or some other activity that you enjoy. (friends optional but preferred). I joined a bowling league a while back and it's done worlds of good as far as focusing me on getting better and rewarding me when my efforts pay off. Just go do something to keep the depression from being the only thing on your mind.

Eat a big slice of cake from the fair or buy a new doodad for my hat or pop bubble wrap.

The glad game never lets you down.

In all seriousness, I find something to do that makes me feel good - watching a happy movie, exercising, taking a walk, calling people that I care about and make me feel good. Those things are always helpful... but everyone gets down now and then.

I've found that my diet makes a big impact. Eating a lot of sugar makes me feel good for about 10 minutes, then I feel like crap for hours. Also, working out at the gym makes me feel good.

All these little things add up. Try it.

Jog.

I go for a night jog here and there. The most amazing feeling. The dark surrounding means you can focus on your thoughts and spend a nice quality time to yourself as you run. When you hit that 'runner's high', your brain releases endorphin- a natural painkiller for your body. It makes you feel GREAT after a hearty, breath-catching run. Makes you feel very alive.

Every time I try to run at dusk, I end up tripping over something and busting myself up. I won't even try running in the dark, I just can't see.

Don't you have street lights where you live? The road is completely visible at all times. I'm not saying you go run into woods at night.

well, feeling down isn't really depression...

Anyway, I just go for a long 3-4hr walk, then sleep it off.

maybe steer clear of alcohol for a little while.

maybe force yourself into a regular exercise routine even tho it is hard to do when you are feeling depressed. (When I was depressed and seeing a psychiatrist, the doctor basically said that regular exercise was at least as effective as antidepressant medication and sometimes even more so).

maybe try to spend time with people who accept and like you, and maybe talk with them about any issues which are troubling you.

maybe take time out to grieve for any recent losses in your life (I remember you posted about the awful situation with your dog, who had to be put down)

also, maybe take stock of what you are spending time thinking about. are you ruminating about your failures, disappointments, short comings..? maybe try to improve your "mental hygiene" by changing the way you think about things.

Thanks everyone. All of this advice is good..I tried the jogging thing, but I have a bum knee. I'm not even supposed to run unless it's for my life.

I actually went home and just vented out to my fiance yesterday. She talked to me and helped me feel better about things and took me to buffalo wild wings for some grub, beer, and trivia.

I think this actually stems from my lack of an outlet. I've always had music as an outlet but haven't been in a band or working on it for about 2 years now. I just need to find a new project to use to get emotional stuff out.

Also, thanks Aidanjm for paying attention, I really appreciate it.

Think of all the people that live like shvt in Africa.

Warning: that may make you more depressed, but it will give you some perspective in life of how good you have it just beacuse of the fact you live in this God-blessed country.

Worst advice ever IMO ... get outside, get some sunshine and exercise!

But seriously...

Try picking up a hobby or, if possible, changing jobs.

If that doesn't work, Xanax and Ambien. It wasn't depression if you don't remember it.

Interaction with people IRL reportedly also helps.
