How do you deal with "anxiety"

I get moments of severe anxiety where I just want to get in the car, drive to an airport and fly away. Over the last 11 years, since I got a driver's license, I have driven to other states like 5 or six times just to "get away." I think I may have some sort of depression/chemical imbalance. So I wonder, anyone here have an all-natural, or chemical interventions that help you cope with severe anxiety.

Learn:

1) Relaxation exercises or mediation.

2) CBT - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Best of luck.

Alcohol. Seriously. I don't mean go binge drinking, I mean drink like one beer and see how you feel after that.

That's got to be about the craziest response yet. Pot and alcohol can both lead to *increased* anxiety. Also, for those people who take "X" - that drug can whack the Serotonin process and leave you FUBARed for life.

I have tried the "alcohol" therapy, only catch is my mother was an alcoholic and I was born with fetal alcohol syndrome.....so more often then not it ends up to be a binge to get the desired effect.

I have seriously considered the pot route.....but I can just envision the scene, white male in commercial area nervously: "hey man, you got some pot." sirens sounds, fall to the ground weeping about not being guilty.

Now I now it is not just me, other family members have attempted suicide and have been committed.I am the only one who held it together long enough to get through college and a couple good jobs.

Just want to finally combat this head on and eliminate it. Thanks for the tips and help, keep them coming in case others here need the info also.

You should talk to a psychiatrist about some meds. Don't let your regular doctor prescribe something for you, mental health is not their specialty.

LMAO....sorry anxiety, but you are a real b**ch to deal with and you really should leave me alone...I gave you smirnoff five days a week and tried to pretend to sleep to make you go away.

hehe, thanks for the laugh.

Seriously though, anyone know what a psychiatric consult would cost, I hear it takes a few visits before they actually can legally prescribe anything.

Probably, $100 for about 20 minutes. However, if you have medical insurance, you should go through them. However, keep in mind, this is your life we're talking about. The history of mental health appears to be genetic in your family. Even if you have to drop a few $$ to get a proper diagnosis, it's still way better than living as you are - or, allowing the anxiety to get worse.

Exercise can help regular exercise that is. But if you already exercise regularly, then see a psychiatrist for a good three month evaluation or more. Some meds work and some don't. Seeing a psychiatrist on a regular basis is the way to do this till you find the right med at the right dose for you.

Once your on meds it doesn't mean your on them for life. Many people find out they can taper off after a while with the help of your doctor. You don't have to go through it alone and many people can get back to normal feelings / feeling very quickly.

Good luck.

Relax. don't do it
When you want to go to it

usually breathing helps me. I studied karate as a kid, and whenever I find myself really stressing out, I go through some of the breathing exercises that we did.

also, a second vote for alcohol when availible in college, every time I had to do a class presentation, I'd have a 20 oz lemonade bottle with me spiked with vodka. not enough to get drunk, but enough to make me relaxed.
