I believe that is the company's name. Anyways, my dad bought a Home Theater Entertainment Reciver made by Aiwa for $188. The guy at Fry's Electronics was trying to pursuade my dad out of buying it saying that Aiwa is at the very low end, and for $200 more he should get the SONY or Mitsubishi one. Have any of you guys had a product made by Aiwa. How good is it, reliability, quality, etc?

Aiwa is a well known brand. If it works for you, that's what counts.

I'm very satisfied with my Aiwa Car Audio MP3 Player. If I'm not mistaken, Aiwa is owned Sony.

I'm not so sure that Aiwa's owned by Sony.. But I still think that even if it's a company owned by SONY, it doesn't have to meet Sony standard quality.

Are the salesmen at Fry's on commission by any chance? I'd bet they are.

When buying any major appliance at a store where the employees are on commission, you can almost guarantee they'll try and get you to "buy up". When my dad bought a new TV, they talked him out of a $299 magnavox in favor of a $450 Sony (in retrospect, its good he bought the one he did, as it has s-video in). This was at ABC Warehouse, which I think is a local name, but in some way affiliated with Fry's (as they have similar specials the same weeks). When they needed to replace their refridgerator, they researched it ahead of time, went there and picked out the exact model they wanted and had it ordered. The sales guy tried to sell a "better" model to them, but they knew what they wanted from what they read. Epinions.com is an excellent place to start looking for reviews of stuff.

Bottem line, do your research, and know what you want before you go into the store to buy it. That way you won't be influenced by the hard sell.

I have a Aiwa discman which is simply amazing.

From what I've heard, Aiwa is Sony's highend division.

I too have heard that Aiwa is related to Sony.
being the high-end division, i dunno. much of their stuff seems lower quality (material, features, quality).

but personally, i think Sony is awesome, and Aiwa is pretty decent.

I will for the new TV we will be purchasing this summer. Aiwa is Sony's high end? Really? I thought Aiwa was made from Sony's spare parts..

My brother has bought an aiwa theater system (not enough $$$ for a real high end one). And it sucked, the 3 disk cd player broke in like a month, he took it back got a new one, same thing happened, did it again and instead of the cd player breaking the whole thing just busted.

Other way around, Aiwa is Sony's LOW end. Sony's ES products are their high end, and they obviously want to keep their better products under the more well known name. Aiwa isn't horrible stuff but I certainly wouldn't own anything they make.

I have a sony ES receiver, it's awesome 110 wpc, all aluminum front plate and class all around.

As far as aiwa, I've not real too high up on them, however if it does what you want and are happy with it, that's all that matters.

aiwa is pretty much the consumer end of things. not prosumer or professional.

when they work, they are fine for most people.

aiwa is not super low end, but they are like 2nd tier.

Aiwa is Sony's low end...but, it is much better than other bottom-of-the-barrel brands. I have an Aiwa receiver, it works great, and when my amp broke down, I even used it for DJing for a few parties, and it performed without a hitch.

aiwa is poor quality. But cheap.

Best get an extended warranty on any aiwa equipment.

shop at BestBuy. they are not on commssion, so they won't try to up sell you. also, definitely get the service plan. they have a straight exchange policy if they can't fix it

Yea, except Best Buy sells alot of crap. Circuit City has nice stuff(I might work there too but I'm not commisioned). Or check out Tweeter/Bryn Mawr, they have good stuff, I have no clue if they are commisioned though.

whats cool is that if say, in 2002 , your best buy protected unit "breaks" they'll swap you a comparable or better 2002 model for your 2001 model..

A friend of mine, he did this 3 or 4 year warranty, and when the new model comes out every year, his "breaks" and he gets an upgraded new unit..
