Cash that i save up by being frugal and not having expensive tastes, or hobbies. There is practically no market for used pc parts where i live, so i give away my old stuff for free.

To those that made up their gpu cost by cryptocurrency mining, how many gpu's did you need initially for mining? I would think that one would need (even when cc was starting out) a farm of gpu's to get any kind of income from mining.

Depends on when you started. I started in late 2013 on Litecoin on a 7950, which 100% paid for a r9 290 shortly after release for $400. If you got in on the early bitcoin days a single card could make you thousands of dollars of bitcoins at today's BTC prices. I made a modest ~$600 total off of Litecoin between 1 7950, and 2 290's and that was the biggest my "farm" ever got. That's revenue not including the cost of electricity at the time.

Depends on your intention with mining as well. If you actually want it to bring in any kind of reasonable income with it, you would need to have a decent setup. If you just want to buy a nice GPU, pay it off and save for the next one it historically hasn't been too bad. Even outside the possibility of currency appreciation, as recent as this time last year it's been possible to make a decent profit off crypto. Before I built out my Ethereum rig I just used my existing 290s to mine for a couple weeks, and between Feb 21st and March 8th I made about CAD$300. Not bad considering at the time a refurb ref 290 was selling for $230 and a refurd Tri-X $250 on Newegg. I chose to buy a bunch of stuff out of pocket over the course of 2016, and even directly cashing out every week or so to pay for power and the equipment it's paid for itself after power with a couple grand left over.

I find that people always overpay for used Nvidia GPUs on ebay. I keep it in good condition with original box, have lots of HQ pictures, and people pay way more than it's worth. Even accounting for the fees, you can still do well. So that lets me upgrade pretty regularly without too much out of pocket.

really solid advice. I've had the same experience, but I haven't kept my boxes as meticulously as I should have...

Exactly the same case at my place. Amd gpus fetch lower prices than amd on the equivalent performance.

Hoping to get a good price for my gtx1070 before volta rolls out. People here just loves nvidia brand, even though it is sucky gt210

I sold my old GPU, a set of speakers I no longer use, and a 23 inch monitor, and ended up with a little less than half of the purchase price of my RX480 4GB. So not bad.

I do plan to do some mining, but I'm going to wait until I have a better case and PSU. Reason being, I tried some mining already, but because my case's airflow is so poor, my GPUs temps very quickly hit the mid 80s with the fan on 100%. So, hopefully a new case with better airflow will help get my temps a lot lower, and then I can continue mining without worrying about destroying my GPU.

My case is a Coolermaster Wavemaster. Yes, its 10 years old. Replacing it with a CoolerMaster N500. Also buying a Superflower 550W Leadex Silver PSU because A) my PSU is starting to make funny noises that make me think the fan is going, B) my PSU is something like 6 years old, C) my PSU only has 6 pin connectors, not 8 pin.

Every time I spend a bunch of money on hookers and blow, I put $5 into a jar. Then I use that money to buy more hookers and blow. During that time, I'll show the hookers how slow and tired my computer has gotten. At that point they feel terrible for me and offer to buy me new parts.

Between myself and my clients, I buy a decent amount of hardware. Sometimes that hardware comes with a rebate and I make sure I mail that rebate out ASAP. When I get the rebate in the form of a credit card, I use it to refill my Amazon GC to avoid the expiration date and the monthly "maintenance fee" by the time I'm ready for a GPU upgrade I have a decent amount stashed in my Amazon GC to offset my out of pocket costs. I could also sell my old card to offset the cost even further but I usually either give it away to a friend or upgrade one of my other systems.

Last month I bought a Sennheiser Game Zero headset from Dell.com which cost me nothing out of pocket thanks to their rewards program and a $6000 server I ordered for a client.

I never file this rebate, then just feel good for getting a "good deal".

I'm not the only one I imagine. I usually don't do rebate deals though, but I need to be better about filing them. I'm going to probably do what you're doing with the Amazon since I rarely use anything else.

Yeah, I used to be really bad at mailing out my rebates. Just last week I found an old rebate receipt from 2011 for $20 from a router I purchased at Fry's... I was disappointed in myself for not sending it out. It may not seem like a lot of money but it adds up over the course of a couple years, which is about my GPU upgrade cycle. Especially if you buy a lot of crap.

I use to pay flat out cash, but now I put it on whatever CC/Vendor offers the highest cash/points/whatever back just to shave a little off the final price.

Old pieces get sold for pizza+beer or given to family members. Luckily my upgrade cycle falls in line with summer vacations at my job so I pick up a lot of over time. Nothing like getting paid for 8-12 hrs @ 2x rate of work for 2-3 hours of actual work and the rest surfing the internet.

ez. stop buying stuff you do not need with money you do not have to impress people who do not care about you.

you quickly realize you have plenty of money left over for whatever gpu you want.

usually buy 4 gpu at a time and pay in full when the cc bills comes due. vega is next up.

I was banned at Overclockers a many years ago when I said something about another member being taken advantage of over a GPU for mining.

That is not Overclock, I still stop by there now and again.

My AMD 480 has mined $300+ worth of Ethereum since launch day. It paid for itself plus another GPU.
Is it still worth getting into ETH/ETC mining today? The exchanges list conversion rates at upto $50 USD per ETH.

I've an RX 480, and I've gotten myself an Ethereum Wallet (?) through Mist. Its exciting/fun to think about. I'd love to pick your mind regarding this, if you'd be willing to shed some light for a mining noob

Vish

Do you offer them rides on your Husky? I wish there was a market for "cheap pillion riding experience" , cos that'd easily fund GPU/PC upgrades among other things.....

I think so if you have reasonable power costs in a cool climate.

Post in the thread and a lot of us would be happy to help you:

http://www.portvapes.co.uk/?id=Latest-exam-1Z0-876-Dumps&exid=threads/ethereum-gpu-mining.2463816/

It can be rewarding even this late in the game. I appreciate that thread for getting me in when I did. Hell my 480 mined enough I could buy a 1080 ti with the profits.

I've got a pair of RX 470 4GB cards on my way (assuming that they don't get cancelled for OOS, like the last couple of cheap RX 470 orders). Would be cool to finally start mining with them. (Something that I SHOULD HAVE done with my HD4850 cards when I got them. If I had mined BitCoin that early on, I would be rich right now... Urg.)
