How do you get rid of the "gum-like" substance on the FOP32?

Those gum-like stuff is for thermal transfer on the fop32. Does anyone know how to get rid of those easily?? It sticks to the fop32 real bad.

Thanks.

I cleaned as much as I could with alcohol, then used sandpaper and cleaned up the bottom of the h/s. I was going to leave it on mine, but the stuff stuck to the covering more than the h/s.

I just used my fingernail (thumb acually) and some goo gone and fingernail polish remover.

It's working just fine right now.

A little 4D-40 or the equivalent also works. (I use "Wonder Mist.&quot

Is that the same as a thermal pad? I just removed my stock HS yesterday to find that the thermal pad has smushed all over the die (Duron). Durons have a tiny moat around the die and all that goop was down in there. That stuff was the gummiest, stickiest mess I have ever seen. It was so hard to get off the DIE, which royall pissed me off. I removed it from the HS with acetone (fingernail polish remover), and even that was a massive pain in the butt.

I have a FOP32-1 on order and was praying it wouldn't have that crap on there. I think the pad probably works pretty good but if you ever take the HS off you are left with a friggin' mess.

I always use a razorblade to get that thermal gunk off of new heatsinks.. I also use a razorblade to get thermal paste off most of the time as well.

Through experience removing window tint glue from my car, THE BEST SUBSTANCE to use is oven cleaner. Just spray a few drops on the heatsink, let it soak for a minute, and then take a toothpick and spread the foam around thoroughly to dislodge the dissolved glue. Remember to wipe off the glue immediately with a paper cloth because this substance reacts with aluminum and makes it turn black. Spray a little more after removing the glue and wipe off with a tissue to remove the black oxidation caused by the reaction.

Like your saliva, oven cleaner works a hundred times better to break down grease and food particles and suspends it in a foam so that you can clean up the waste. I haven't tried wd-40 as others have suggested mainly because I believe it is better suited as a lubricant and rust remover.

Note: Heavy duty oven cleaner can eat through your skin in a matter of minutes. Do not let it come into contact with your skin, and do not by any means inhale the caustic mist from the spray.

Fanon, The FOP will come with PCTC pre-applied. Its supposed to 'change' to bubble gum like, thats how it fills micro gaps and improves heat transfer. If you have to remove it, which I don't recommend, remove it before attaching the sink for the first time. Its semi-sold before the change and easy to remove. Just be aware that many silicone based compounds either squeeze out or dry out. Also, thin pad may actually cushion the core a little during hsf installation, helping to protect against chipping.

Thanks DaddyG. I was planning on leaving the pad on but wasn't sure. Glad to see someone recommend it. When I had my stock HS on before I took the pad off it worked much better than it does without the pad (using thermal compound on the bare HS) so it was obvious those pads work.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

Unfortunatly my girlfriend values her fingernails much more than my friggin heatsink, so no supply of fingernail polish remover here.

I like the oven cleaner idea, i think it will work the best too, but i don't have that around also, and I want to keep my hands...hehe...

The pad that come with the fop32 works not bad at all. I saw some reviews about it but I couldn't remember the links...sorry

The reason I remove the pad because I am lazy and don't want to think of a creative way to use my arctic silver....um...how about toothpaste?? hehe....

I installed my FOP32-1 today. I left the thermal pad on. Right now my Duron 650@900@1.725v is running around 40-44C. That's much better than the 50-52 @800 I was getting with the stock HS.

When I took off my old HS, there was some residual pad goop left on the side of the die. I had some lighter fluid, so I soaked a q-tip and applied that to the leftover goop. Man, it dissolved it right away! Much better than the freaking polish remover I was using. I was quite surprised. Thanks for that tip.

Fanon,

You might want to try to disconnect your fan for a short time, keeping an eye on your temps. PCTC normally needs about 58c to change completely, you might lower your temps a bit more after 'cooking' a little.

Change? Hmm. So once it changes the temp will be even lower than the 44 or so it is now?

Interesting.

I am actually afraid to do that. LOL
