I am sure most of us have a mainstream job, but I was wondering if you guys / gals do something else to make some money on the side..

It could be something like a second job, a hobby which earns you some money etc..

I have tried ebay a bit (looking for deals and then selling them on ebay), but it was too much of an effort and the margins were pretty slim and to much hassle.

What do you do for some money on the side?

I sell movie memorabilia/top quality latex masks busts. I also collect them so it's more of a hobby. I sell when I get bored of looking at a mask and up the price x2 or more. I look around for rare memorabilia and try to score a good deal on it... then mark up the hell out of it and sell to a n00b.

bartend. unfortunately it usually requires some aspect of being cool and having an ounce of charisma to land a decent gig so that disqualifies most here.

funny you should ask this as i just got a "job" today representing Ralph Lauren Paints at my local Home Depot.
I guess it is like a spokesperson for the paints and interior design all in one.
Its just for 4 hours every saturday in august but the pay is not too bad... plus, i am thinking if they like me, they might be able to offer more jobs in the future.

Then you're looking at the wrong deals. You can make an extra $2k-$3k a month with very little effort involved.

Marked for later... And can you elaborate on this? How much capital do you have to make your initial purchases?

My AMEX allows me to not really need any capital for what I do. This can be dangerous though, b/c if what you have purchased doesn't sell, the AMEX bill still comes and it must be paid in full.

Tech work on the side. I have had the same place paying me a flat rate to watch thier server and do tech support. A friend uses craigslist to find little gigs. Some are also under the jobs section.

And the lottery. I play the lottery.

Did you buy the "ebay secret plan" series, if so let us know how to make a fourtune on ebay.

Haha, I did not. Maybe I will have to check them out.....expand my business.

Making a couple extra grand on Ebay/month is far from a fourtune though. I think I could make more doing what I do, but I would have to devote a lot more time and energy to it. That is something I just don't want to do right now.

I started out teaching tennis on the side. I had about 5 students, at $20 an hour each week. After about 6 months, my phone wouldn't quit ringing with new students. After a while, a country club offered me a gig. Try teaching something you are good at, but usually this is hard for majority of the ppl, not saying you are one.

You can ebay, like other's have said. Buy cutting edge brand name clothing en masse at warehouses during the weekends (when they do sample sales), and then turn around and sell on ebay for about 25%-35% profit. It doesn't seem like alot, but if you dip into the thousands, it's a good deal of extra spending cash for relatively little work. Make sure you only go for the cash cows.

Find bulk sellers (through Ebay or otherwise) and resell...$1k a month for well under an hour of work each day is what I got back in 01ish...haven't done it since then.

The things I looked for were:
Small (So it didn't take up too much space in my then-tiny apartment and was cheap to ship)
Non-distinguishable (Tomatoes are tomatoes but your brand of memory stick might be better than my brand of memory stick)
Medium price (High enough that I don't lose all the profit to shipping, low enough that I can spread risk around to many buyers)

Uh...I have rental income from some property.

Oh...And investing I guess...but that's hardly non-mainstream...
