So I figured my new job would give me 2 weeks of vacation time because I'm a new grad... and what place gives you more anyways? I wasn't hoping for much although my mom highlighted a part in my contract mentioning sick leave. I figured that meant crap because most engineering companies and modern tech companies incorporate PTO meaning it's all lumped into one. Cuz honestly, you don't want people taking random sick days off for the sake of using them up (I had a teacher who would be sick for extended amounts of time before she retired... yeah hooray for our broken school systems still not on a PTO concept). Well anyways I was extremely surprised when I talked to HR and asked about sick leave. 6 days a year. It's not much, but hey it's their fault for incorporating it. If people abuse it, that's not my loss.
Do you always use it for legitimate reasons? Or is it better to dip into your vacation days? Or should I be the goody goody and never use it because honestly, I rarely get sick and I've never been sick enough to miss a day of school except one day in 7th grade when I got stomach flu (I don't think its wise to show up to school when you're throwing up every few hours)... but all other sickness I've dealt with while in school.
So what's your take on it? My parents really want me to go back to Asia with them in the winter because it's something we've been doing for the past 10 - 11 years. My grandparents are old enough where they can't fly over anymore, and so it is crucial for us to go visit. My mom clearly has more vacation days and so she has no problem flying there for a typical 2 week visit or so and especially when her company pretty much shuts down during the holiday season it works out quite well. I figured I could probably afford a week's vacation at most, but that would cut severely into my vacation time, especially when I want to create a long weekend here or there. Is this where sick days come into use? Hah JK, I wouldn't ever do that....
