How do you ident a dead mobo?

kk, i've never rly dealt with a dead mobo before. i've had components fail.

problem:

won't post. all fans including CPU fan spin up. no video signal.

removed everything but cpu, no beeps. i know the case speaker is working, it beeped at me a couple of weeks ago when i forgot to connect power to vid card.

changed out PSU, no change.

cleared bios multiple times. removed power cord and CMOS battery and held down CMOS switch for 30+ seconds.

computer will shut down from holding the case power button down.


how it happened:

was running fine. went to reset computer, posted just fine. when it went to load windows, it just hung and gave a flashing "_". i shrugged it off and hit reset. it won't POST again.


dead mobo? can a mobo just die like that? i didn't smell anything, can't see any burn or scorch marks.

Can you turn pc off by holding power button? (Present/working CPU is normally required for that) Also does 3v feed led changes colour once powered up? Best to test your CPU elsewhere if you can as it can die together with mobo. If mobo/CPU are okay it has to beep with no memory/other parts.

when you have pc speaker connected and it doesn't beep when the ram is taken out = bad mobo so long as fans spin up fine when you turn on the power. i'm 99% sure this is what you were saying when you said "removed everything but cpu, no beeps. i know the case speaker is working, it beeped at me a couple of weeks ago... " so yes, i would say its the mobo, and yes anything can die without warning.
