How do you know what the media reports is true and what is false?

Seems like I would have to spend my life researching if I wanted to know.

You are more intelligent than 90% of the population.

You can never know if something is true or something is false if you don't find out for yourself. When your parents told you the stove was hot you believed them but you still touched it just to find out. When your parents told you that Santa brought you presents on Christmas you believed them but you still tried to stay awake and see Santa.

Some people go on believing what they are told without researching for themselves. I personally HATE 2nd hand information and I refuse to even listen to 3rd hand information.

its difficult to know that. Believe only very little and always know that they, the media, have an agenda. Reporting the news, I mean actual news and just facts, has become secondary to manipulating ideas and thus to manipulate people and their ideas. The media is a monster in my opinion.

Read, and then when you think you know the answer, read more. Print journalists tend to have more integrity, but that isn't always saying much. Just read read read. Different sources, different angles, different news agencies.

TL;DR - I'm always right.

First step is to consume news from a variety of diverse sources. That means from other countries, from organizations with varied political leanings, and and views of the world. A socialist newspaper from Poland may have an important take on a news story that Fox News wouldn't even conceptualize for example.

+100

Too many people these days don't question what they hear, which I find really scary.

I agree with previous comments also about keeping your (our) sources in information diverse - it's amazing how the same story can be presented (believably) in completely different ways by different groups.

Another thing I look for when reading, especially online, is spelling mistakes. When I'm reading something and come across a typo or misspelling, I usually stop reading and ignore what I've read, whether it supports my general beliefs or not.

If it's on TV, I can be sure it's true. Thousands of trained professionals put in hundreds of thousands of hours every week to make sure I have the best information advertisers can buy. I go to sleep every night knowing I have a good grasp of what's happening in the world, and how it'll affect me.

Don't bother watching the news. Just go to bed thinking you need to "be afraid. Be VERY afraid." and you'll have gotten the gist of it.

I knew our news was filtered, but it wasn't until recently that I realized just how filtered it was. I had asked a Ukrainian coworker about Putin invading & what a modern-day bad guy he was and he was just like "good". What do you mean good? He said the Ukraine was half Russian, half Ukrainian, and the Russians portion wanted to go back to being part of Russian since they were never Ukrainian to begin with, so he wanted Putin to take his side of the country back. What the heck! I had no idea. CNN makes a big deal about the craziness of it all and really the people who live there were totally supportive of it. I'm probably getting the names & everything mixed up, but you get the idea...we're definitely filtered here.

!#@&

My opsec failed :^(

You only thought you had opsec. The opsec was actually on your coworker's laptop, which had VPN enabled when you glanced at his screen. You probably just misremembered :awe:

I'd go check for yourself.

Maybe go see if things in Syria are as bad as they are. Odds are it's all lolly pops and gum drops. Report back to us when you're done. It cooooooooooulllddd be all media lies, so I'm hoping you do some really good investigating.

You have to research it yourself. Usually, after the 2nd or 3rd strike, you should stop listening to the offending news organization/source.

We are living in a time where information is available, literally at your finger tips, within seconds.

This is true, let's hope Obama doesn't kill the internet.

It probably depends a lot on the type of story you're trying to verify.

The top story of cnn's website right now is:

American ISIS hostage Kayla Mueller dead, family says

I would essentially take that story at face value. It pretty much just recounts the facts to the best of anyone's knowledge. If there is any false information in it, it probably isn't intentional. The skeptic in me does pay lip service to the idea that perhaps the entire story is a falsehood, with the family just paid actors, for the purpose of having one more news report to point to when the government needs to justify actions against ISIS, or perhaps for some other nefarious purpose. I quickly dismiss that because there are too many elements of the story that lend themselves to cross examination and fact checking. If I were a betting man, I'd say that Kayla Meuller is indeed dead, and that ISIS did it. That still doesn't mean that I accept it without reservations. I'm merely operating under the assumption that it's true, and I make sure that I'm always cognizant of that fact.

Everyone has missed the important point and the flaw is revealed in your question. You want to know how you can know the truth, but you do not ask why you need to know. Why do you want to know what is true in the media. What is your need? Why do you have such a need? Your need has an origin in a feeling you do not understand. Understand that first and your question will disappear.

I'm a skeptic, so I usually just assume that everything the news media says is false or biased.

Everyone that agrees with my personal preferences and biases is telling the truth, duh. Especially if what they're saying confirms my suspicions that there is a vast global conspiracy to subvert the truth and control our perceptions. Bonus points if that conspiracy involves the Jews, boujwah liberals, or Kenyans posing as heads of state.

I mean, I could evaluate each article according to the rules of logic that have been known for hundreds to thousands of years to see if their conclusions necessarily follow from their premises, but who has time for that? Ain't nobody got time for that, especially when I've got all the truth I need right here in my gut.
