First step is to consume news from a variety of diverse sources. That means from other countries, from organizations with varied political leanings, and and views of the world. A socialist newspaper from Poland may have an important take on a news story that Fox News wouldn't even conceptualize for example.

If it's on TV, I can be sure it's true. Thousands of trained professionals put in hundreds of thousands of hours every week to make sure I have the best information advertisers can buy. I go to sleep every night knowing I have a good grasp of what's happening in the world, and how it'll affect me.

You have to research it yourself. Usually, after the 2nd or 3rd strike, you should stop listening to the offending news organization/source.
