I've worked in the media and have a background in journalism. The entire industry is bullshit right now. A lot of hacks doing the job who all serve their masters. Whether it be the bosses, management, advertisers, government (especially the case of state run media), political parties, some ideology, or the reporter's own biases. That's what happens when you want professionals to work for peanuts.

Just read, read, read from a variety of sources and learn how to spot yellow journalism. Avoid articles that are sensationalist, scandal-mongering, make sweeping assumptions of exaggerations, or use clickbait.

I used to use PressReader, which is for iOS and Andriod. IIRC, it was $30/mo for unlimited newspapers. Bit pricey.

When did people begin insisting that everything in the world around them be presented in black & white? Seems to me to be a recent phenomena, and more evidence of the increasing stupidity of Americans.

It's all gray. The shade will shift over time, but it's never absolutely black or absolutely white.

Seems like an awfully absolute worldview, and not well evidenced either.

So much paranoia. What the "mainstream" media reports is generally factual even with their biases included. The may get some stuff wrong on fast breaking stories like Charlie Hebdo but they eventually correct the misreporting. The biggest problem with the mainstream media is what they choose to ignore rather than what they report and as a previous poster mentioned that can largely be overcome by getting your news and information from many different sources instead of a single source.

It's the breadth of new that's the problem imo. They air what gets the $, and you usually have to look far and wide to fill in the blanks. The networks all get the money the same way. I'm talking about news that has some air of credibility. Shit like Fox and MSNBC are just partisan circlejerks. You'd be better off watching a blank wall.

The voices tell me.

You didn't know what you were looking for, 'til you heard the voices in your ear.

Reasonable folks know to consider the source on any news they consume. There are trusted sources who opinion and veracity I trust, and others who I consider with a healthy bit of skepticism.

Often I'll listen to both sides and discover the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I have a simple method for vetting sources; does it agree with my preconceived biases about the topic? If so, then it must be valid. Using this stringent guideline, I've never once been bothered by any news I've read.

You are more intelligent than 90% of the population.

You can never know if something is true or something is false if you don't find out for yourself. When your parents told you the stove was hot you believed them but you still touched it just to find out. When your parents told you that Santa brought you presents on Christmas you believed them but you still tried to stay awake and see Santa.

Some people go on believing what they are told without researching for themselves. I personally HATE 2nd hand information and I refuse to even listen to 3rd hand information.
There are lots of things each of us know to be true that we would be foolhardy to attempt to prove firsthand.

I always figured the news reported facts, not made them, but it seems that's not actually the case? So if they really don't have anything to report on do they just make stuff up using clips from other things?

One thing I always find odd is how they'll cover a story for super long, then suddenly, it's gone. Like, what happen to Ebola? We don't hear about that at all anymore.

If nothing's happening they'll run pointless local stories, or else find something obscure to fixate on for a day to a week, like how the President returned a salute. Very few news outlets make stuff up and pass it off as reality, but everything from which specifics are reported on to how the reporters or writers phrase things will change the facts' implications completely.

Surely this isn't all news to you though?

I think it's cute how innocent and naive you are. Keep it man...

only way is that you HAVE to have principles you believe in. Be guided by your principles.

High-minded, e.g., based on true spiritual insight, or what else you BELIEVE is true.

You have to rely on your principles.

A million light years opposite that is....allowing yourself to get carried along with political correctness. That's anti-truth. That's YOU allowing yourself to be pawn of another. In summary, that's why evil Hillary Clinton may take the presidency)
