every parent I know thinks that their infant/toddler is astoundingly smart and days away from challenging Einstein.

clearly this isn't the case. average is average for a reason, but how do you know when your kid is just mediocre?

As a father of a 4 year old I've wondered this myself. Just yesterday my daughter said something really clever and I thought to myself... wow she is going to be smart but then everytime she counts past 10 she skips 15, she hits 25, 35, etc... but misses 15 everytime.

I think you need someone independent to really tell.

I had one of those haven't heard from in 20 years, but need to friend you facebook people add me a year or so ago. (I rarely say no.) Her daughter got a 1500 on the SAT!! Her daughter is soooooooo smart.
"Wait a second, is that 1500 for the 3 parts combined?" "Yes! Isn't she smart! <breakdown of the 3 scores.>" "Do you understand that 500 is the average score, pretty much by definition, on each part? And, since the stupidest kids don't take the SATs, an average score is just slightly below average for all students? Congratulations. Your daughter is below average."

Amazingly, that wasn't enough to get defriended. And a comment about Jesus giving her a flat tire didn't do it either. It wasn't until her daughter was walking home & some guy whistled at her or something and her repo-man husband went out looking for hime that I was defriended. I made a comment about how "this oughta be good - The Repo-Man meets Dog the Bounty Hunter. What's he gonna do when he finds him? Have a prayer circle??"

I don't much believe in so-called "potential" councilors and mothers like to talk about ... That's just a word for fail without saying fail, loser and deadbeat.

Zebo's are average. When they can support themselves I say smart.

Im assuming they still think a 1600 in the sats is perfect and the kids didn't bother telling them otherwise. Now getting a 36 on your acts is much harder imo, hell if you got above 18 you were considered smart.
