I peel & core an apple, chop it into smaller pieces, toss in some raisins and brown sugar. Let it cook together til it's thick, the apples are still slightly crunchy, and the oatmeal is just a little chewy.

I've been experimenting with oatmeal recently. I like it far drier than the receipe calls for. Then I like a good deal of salt and lots of brown sugar. Everything else that I've tried just doesn't taste as good as that prepackaged microwave stuff. Sad isn't it. Maybe I need to try the steel cut oats. But at 10 times the price, I just haven't taken the plunge yet.

10x the price is more than a slight exaggeration. McCann's is expensive (nearyl $6 for a 28 oz tin here). After a few tins of that I noticed this brand on the shelf (Trader Joes) for less than half the cost. $2.29 I think for a 30 oz. The cheapest rolled oats I found in my admittedly brief google searching was $1.11 a lb (when you buy 25 lbs). So the retail packaging I'm buying is 10% more than bulk rolled oats.

wont the acid in the oj curl the milk?

The bacon straightens it.

Mmmm.... i love real oatmeal. The kind that takes a while to cool. Whole oats. I cook it is half water, half milk. Pinch of salt to start. Just as it is finishing cooking, i will add a pinch of cinnamon, pinch of nutmeg and splash of vanilla.
When it has thickened a bit, I will put it in a bowl and spill a bit more milk over it with some brown sugar and rum soaked raisins.

Yea, its kind of involved for just oatmeal, but i love it.

Rip open packet, pour in water, cook in microwave for 1 minute. Sometimes I get fancy and use milk.

Steelcut will take a while to cook. But you can soak the oats overnight, and it'll cook much faster.

i prefer mine ice cold: 1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats, some freshly grated nutmeg, just enough soy/almond milk to cover, then let it soak overnight in the refrigerator. in the morning i throw in some fresh/frozen berries and slivered almonds, stir and enjoy.

I use the instant. I add less liquid than the box recommends because I don't like it liquidy.

Simmered on the stove with milk instead of water. Brown sugar and a dash of honey to sweeten it up. And yes, steel cut own regular rolled.
