How do you organize your MP3 collection?

Right now I have about 20 albums that I have ripped each in their own directory. I also have a few "category" directories with miscellaneous songs within that genre (i.e. rap, techno, metal, comedy...). As this collection grows (6GB on a 30GB drive allocated for file storage), how should I manage it? One of the problems with having so many directories is queing up winamp which is a pain.

Your thoughts and practices are appraciated.

I go by decade/artist/album, typically, with some exceptions (Soundtracks, World Music, Disco, Christmas)

I have an MP3 folder with folders for each album I've ripped. I can queue them all up by loading the entire MP3 folder, but I have shorter playlists that I usually use.

So you can queue up a bunch of songs in Winamp and save the list?

I use MusicMatch Jukebox. Just like the interface better and the equalizer gives much better sound out of my laptop than Winamp or Windows Media Player. And I'm usually mostly on my laptop.

I gave up trying. I just go by artist. Most of mine are just in 1 folder though... I reached the limit for number of files when I had windows 98 so I had to start with other folders named by artist. :-(

I feel no need to keep them organized by cd... Not every song is good, so I don't keep them all.

I only get albums (IRC), so everything's just listed by artist...lots of albums, yeesh.

I do the exact same thing and it has proven very succesful. I have about 45GB of fully organized, MP3 Albums. Only thing yet for me to do it create some Playlists.

My MP3's are named with "Artist- SongTitle", and then grouped by genre. I also try to fill in all the ID3v1 and v2 information

This seems to be the best way. And then make your customer play lists from that. I do this as well. And then my Theme/Genre for Various Artist albums.

Artist\Album\Artist - Album - Track# - Title.mp3 or now .ogg

Makes it easy to see at a glance what album an individual song is from, just by the filename

For normal albums: Artist\Album\Track#-TrackName
For soundtracks/compilations: Various Artists\Album\Track#-TrackName

I also use Tag And Rename to ensure full ID3 tags are on each.

you mean people organize their mp3s?

I have everything in one folder, though some may be in their own album folder but basicly everything is all jumbo upped.

I just use the search function
