There is a correct way to pronounce it, but I won't post it just yet.
Don't wanna skew the results

edit: the pronounciation accepted by Iranians is ee-ron/ee-raan (same thing)

That's how it's supposed to be
for some reason our Presidency and Media has turned it into eye-ran

BS America has been saying it like I-Ran for a long time. Remember the bomb iran parody song of Barbara Anne by the beach boys back in the 80's.

Also this is America, so I will say I-ran.

That's because they have to pronounce it that way. Try saying Iran in your stereotypical Seven Eleven Indian-like accent.. it sounds like e-run, even if you try to pronounce it eye-ran . (well at least it does to me )

The name of the country is ee-ron.
If you permit me to use a more personal example ... What if I started pronouncing your name "Cobray"?

So the American-English pronunciation of something is the end-all of how it is pronounced?

I wouldn't care because you would be an idiot. Same with Iran, I really don't think they care...you don't see them telling us the proper pronunciation. Only American douche bags trying to be politically correct etc. Unless you are in a formal setting, I-ran is fine. We don't ask other countries to take the accent out of their speech when they say American.

Also we don't say Spain is Espana do we?

I think its neither ee-ron or ee-ran, its more like ee-raan, its an 'aa' sound rather than an 'a'

I say eye-ran.

I'm not required to say it with an Iranian accent. Just like I don't expect Iranians to say "America" like someone from Philly does. I don't criticize them for saying "ah-mericah" when we say, "uh-merica". Of course people from different regions are going to pronounce things with a different accent.
