EEEran....Eeeeeerock.

Between eits and I, we've decided that's how a Persian speaker would say each, but an Iraqi would pronounce the latter "(glottal)Ah-raq"

but they would still end it in 'rock' instead of 'rack'

I didn't think the second syllable was in question

Also, I'd spell it "rawq" so people remember that it ends with a glottal too

You're right about Germany and Spain. Germany isn't spelled Deutschland. And Spain isn't spelled Espana.

But in English, we spell the name Iran, and it doesn't break any english pronounciation rules if we pronounce it as ee-raan/ee-ron.

English pronunciation rules? What a joke. Phonetics is teh lies!!!

Lay-zak vs Lie-zak
Which one is the correct pronounciation? They both seem correct to me.

Neither, actually it is 'Lee Isaac'

English is such an unphonetic language. For example:

tough
through
though

The -ough is pronounced differently for each word. That's why I say Iran can be pronounced various ways and all of them can be correct since there aren't always set rules.

Take "iodine" for example. One would probably pronounce it "eye-oh-dine" and not "ee-oh-dine".

I'm not disagree that there are multiple 'correct' ways to say Iran:
eye-ran, ee-ran, eye-ron, ee-ron

They all seem to fit our rules of phonetics. But this word differs from most other english words in that we have taken it from another language/people that already have an accepted pronunciation for it.

I'm sure people from different regions of Iran will have slight differences in how they pronounce it. But I am pretty confident that none of them start it off by saying "EYE".

BS America has been saying it like I-Ran for a long time. Remember the bomb iran parody song of Barbara Anne by the beach boys back in the 80's.

Also this is America, so I will say I-ran.

You sir are an ignorant buffoon.

You should read the rest of the thread.
I think SVT Cobra has been converted to the ee-ron side

No one says EEE.... You have horrible poll options.

Some people say Eye-Ran (or I-Ran). That's obviously lame.

Some peopel pronounce the I like a short I like in "it"

I say it Ih-Ron, and I'm almost certain most people in the US say it that way as evident by how TV says it.

So, not only do we have our own pronunciation for Germany and Spain, we give them our own names as well. And yet you're less miffed about that than about how people pronounce Iran.

I'm not gonna go around changing what's already set in stone ... I mean, paper.
But pronunciation is something that's more or less open to discussion.

I keep talking about this with a friend, but still can't believe it. It's hopeless, english just doesn't have any real pronunciation rules. People just talk like most other people does and thats all.

I wonder what you do when you read an unknown name, feed threads like this one i guess (I'm venezuelan...)

Yeah, that's the way I pronounce it, too.
