BS America has been saying it like I-Ran for a long time. Remember the bomb iran parody song of Barbara Anne by the beach boys back in the 80's.

Also this is America, so I will say I-ran.

Yeah, this is America, so I will say ee-ron.

People said eye-ran before iPods. Does it really matter, though? We still pronounce Deutschland as "germ-a-nee".

In my travels, I've learned that generally speaking, the more educated a person is, the better spoken their pronunciations of nations and locations are.

Further, I've also never had a professor pronounce it Eye-Ran. But then again, I went to UCLA, majored in both political science and history, and there are a distinct lack of hicks and Fox News advocates over there.

So maybe I'm biased.

You sound very smug, conceited, and self-righteous. Get off your high horse.

Ah, so it's a distance thing?

Well then since the sun is so far away, I'm going to pronounce it "Hugh Beaumont".

Go ahead. I pronounce it the same way.

But seriously, I probably mispronounce a lot of the names of these foreign countries. I'm not beyond learning, though, and since I see that ee-ron is the generally accepted pronunciation, I'll probably start using that.

I was in Egypt yesterday and I'm in Israel as I type this. I think I've had too many political conversations recently. Point ceded.

On a side not, funny it's not...Eye-zreal, huh?

We all probably mispronounce a lot of things. The best thing we can do is to learn every chance we get.

One of my best friends is Persian and the correct pronounciation is ee-ron (long e on the first syllable quickly clipped into a slightly rolling r with a short o on the second). I can't quite say it perfect myself as Farsi has some very interesting inflections/accents that my whitebread American larnyx just can't duplicate, even with so simple a word.

You can pronounce it however you like and it will still be correct - as long as people understand you. Besides. we all speak a dialect in one form or another. Just compare East coast vs. West coast American English accents. Which one is correct? They both are.

Language is evolving, deal with it.

My ex from MO used to be make fun of me every time I said 'tournament' pronounced (tour-na-ment) as opposed to "tur-na-ment". East of the mizzipi, it's tournament.

And as far as I'm concerned she was in a sa-rar-ity, not a so-roar-ity.

And who the hell came up with the spelling for gauge?

Oh, ee-raq/n.

You're right about Germany and Spain. Germany isn't spelled Deutschland. And Spain isn't spelled Espana.

But in English, we spell the name Iran, and it doesn't break any english pronounciation rules if we pronounce it as ee-raan/ee-ron.
