I've never thought that correct pronunciations were pretentious. ...But only in that mispronouncing seldom-used words in an attempt to make oneself appear smart makes one sound like even more of a fool.

FINISH HIM! BANALITY!!!!!

I'll admit: I lol'd.

according to dictionary.com, the IPA pronouciation is "n?t?"

n is a regular n sound - like the first and last "n" in "noun"
? is the "i" in sit
t? is "ch" as in "church

I always found the "nitch" pronounciation kind of foolish, as if catering to another culture was somehow beneath us.

Then again I know french and spanish so it has always been natural for me to switch dialects and modify pronunciations without shame (out of necessity rather than choice)

BTW, I have to say that what really annoys me is when I state the country of my ancestry as "el salvador" with a spanish accent and people give me blank stares...

I then promptly pronouce it as "El (as in Else) Sal (as in Sally) - Va (as in Vacuous) dor (as in Door) and they immediately recognize it.

That said, people that go out of their way to pronouce certain words and totally butcher them is like nails on chalkboards

I thought the main American pronunciation was 'nitch', even though a bit more east the word is pronounced 'neesh'.
