How do you quickly destroy your own hard drive, or at least erase all data (not virus)

In these days of layoffs and such, you never know when you will get that tap on the shoulder. Sometimes you only have 10 minutes to collect your stuff. and sometimes you don't want anyone to see whats going on hard drive or all the work you've done...
IT usually reformats anyway. so whats the fastest? format c:/ ?

Boot into Dos and format c:

Getting rid of the windows folder doesn't get rid of your data...

Better yet, get a boot disk and do an fdisk.

Edit: I just read WarCleric's post and agree. If one of my users did this, I would kill him in the unemployment line. Get rid of your files and be done.

Before this gets locked or whatever, I just was curious really.
I don't mean no harm or anything.
I had someone ask me at work, cuz I was the 'computer guy' I was just wondering what everyone thought.

So put the ethics of the situation aside, because i ain't doin anything.

Open up your case, take out the hard drive, and hold it under running water while rubbing magnets and ketchup all over it.

I've never tried format c: /q or that NSA grade sector, but for speed so I don't know how fast they are, but I'd say deleting the partitions on fdisk should do it.

That would do the trick. Why don't you take a piss on it for good measure.

So what would putting a hard drive underwater or rubbing it with Catsup (Ketchup?) do? If there's no power to it, the water won't short it. The HDs are sealed anyway.

Now a properly placed sledgehammer blow...

take a crap on it too. no one will want to try and access that data but the janitor.

now maybe I am getting a little absurd

OK, the list:

1. Remove hard drive
2. place on top of high powered 10000 watt electrical magnet
3. submerge in water
4. remove
5. apply ketchup
6. place in toilet
7. relieve yourself

if you really want to remove it from it's place in #7 \

just leave a note: "Looking for the HDD? Something in stall 6 might interest you."

Hmmmm....none of the ones I've ever cracked open. All the hd's I've ever looked at have a vent in them, it may have a filter, but most have a small vent at least.

Format /yourmother /and_her_mother /and_pa_too isn't gonna do anything they can't recover from, neither is fdisking. If you want to truly delete stuff you need to run a low level formatting utility, ideally multiple times, but once should be enough unless its the feds Its gonna take a while to do that too.

They paid you for the work while you while you were there, deleting it is uncalled for if you ask me.

There are files that will build a 'kill disk'. You boot to it and it will toast the partition, the only thing you can do is fdisk and start from scratch.

When I leave a place, I pop out the Linux CD and start the install. That install always includes the spot for an FDISK. Once that's done, there is little they can do to get anything back

Physically destroying the HDDwith an ax and hot lava is the only way to really be sure your secrets are safe. Why don't you just start now removing what you don't want your employeer to see?

Isn't paranoia wonderful?

actually in all seriousness, find out who your HD builder is, and go to their website, they usually have some low level formatting proggie. Run this proggie and there is no way in god's green hell that they can bring the data back.
