i want to use it for computation. for example, i want to write a function that will delete articles from a table that are over 5 days old.

I think this would be the easiest way. 86400 is the number of seconds in a day, so you just have to take it times the number of days you want (5) and delete the article if it's less then the current time.

ok, what is the column type in the database table?
date? datetime?

is the database mysql? you can use datediff and put all the logic in your query

column type is int(11) unsigned
it is stored by sending in a time variable which is $time=time();

I like to use the 'datetime' field type, because it allows you to use the DAY/MONTH/YEAR MySQL functions.

I have two functions that I use to convert time between mysql and unix timestamps to make things easy.

Why does the code function put everything on the same line?

I believe there's a library in PHP that can translate from time() to a more readable format. Although I think I just use a static time as a comparison (kind of like what Isaiah did) in my webpages... it's been awhile since I've written anything in PHP.
