Well played.. Haha, but no I can't do that, the landlord has been good to me, as far as a landlord can be anyway. I feel like I am really not in a place to make demands. I like the house, I am happy there, pets would be a bonus, but it's not life or death.. As far as what I would get...Hmm, I suppose a small to mid size dog, not a puppy tho. I would get it from an animal shelter or something like that. Actually, my brother is fostering a greyhound that they are looking for a home for him. I would love to get him! But if the landlord says no... Well like some have said I can move. No big deal. I did agree to those terms when I signed the lease, it is clearly listed there, so no one to blame but myself. The landlord asked if I was planning on staying for a long time and I am, but having a pet would make me even more likely to stay longer.

I think they can set just about any terms they want, private or not. I wouldn't want dogs in my property, cause I hate dogs. Just knowing it was there would piss me off... Unless it was a greyhound. I /might/ accept one of those after a personal interview with the dog :^D

Pets are not a protected class. Although I remember one moron who started a thread in ATOT about this same topic. Except he got a doctor's note declaring the pet to be a service animal because he had depression or something retarded like that. Moved the pet into his apartment anyway despite the landlord's disapproval.

OP: Ask your landlord. My tenants did and I ended up charging them $50 more per month and inserted a pet rider into their lease. They are obligated to steam clean the carpets when they vacate the premises. Both of us are happy.

We had to pay something similar when we were renting and got a dog along with a "non-refundable deposit" that they used to do a deep clean of the carpets when we left. While most owners keep their dog under control one bad one can do hundreds or even thousands of dollars of damage.

Can do, yes...but you already have a security deposit, and it'd make more sense to me to add another security deposit. If you rent somewhere for 3 years with a $50/mo pet fee, you're paying $1,800 just to have a pet there. Children can easily do the same amount of damage..but I guess they can't get away with charging extra for that.

my mother has cats. the whole house smells like cat when you walk in. same with dogs.

There are lots of good pets and (more importantly) good pet owners, but there is nothing that can destory a property faster and more expensively than a bad pet/pet owner.

If your landlord lets you have a pet, he is opening the door to allowing all tenants and future tenants to have pets.

Your only real solutions are to move to a pet friendly rental or buy your own property. Don't risk an eviction by breaching the terms of your rental agreement.

No, if you sign a lease that says no pets, you are legally not allowed to have pets. The only way to get him to change the lease is put a large pet deposit down on the house. Tell him you are willing to put $500 for pet deposit that he keeps if your pet damages the house. That is the only way to get someone to agree.
