Never heard of this so thanks for the heads up. However, I doubt I need any speakers to replace my Klipsch Promedia .

As long as you received the product you agreed to buy for the price you agreed to pay, there has been no scam.

Getting scammed would be getting your box of speakers home and finding bricks packed inside.

Caveat emptor.

So, if somebody sells you something, represents it as a high-quality, and expesnvie product, but it turns out to be junk, that's not a scam?

If that's the case, then I have some really great stuff to sell you.

From dictionary.com

a confidence game or other fraudulent scheme, esp. for making a quick profit; swindle.

Seems to be a scam to me...
"high quality" and "expensive" and "junk" are all relative terms. He can show you magazines too, doesn't say anything about who published them or if they were created in Publisher by the owner of this company.

He presented a product, did hell of a job selling it, and then someone bought it.

Where's the issue? Spending more than you should happens everyday to people, in this case they call it a scam because they regret the purchase. When people buy 6 foot USB cables for $30 or $40 at a retail store, why isn't that called a scam too? Is it just because it's at a larger store?

Legally, it wasn't a scam. Those pyramid chain purchasing schemes aren't "scams" either. They are a service, and people can choose whether to get involved or not. A scam would be where they promise a service or good, take your money, and disappear.

I noticed that the specs do not include things such as SNR, or THD, and I have a feeling that wattage rating is PMPO.

I've been approached 3 times. First time I would have bought them if I actually had a hundred dollars. I didn't know better. Second time, the guy desperately wanted to sell one speaker. I suspect it was actually stolen. The third time, the guys were wearing suits and tried to be professional. I offered them something like 20 bucks, and they gave me a business card and told me to call when I was serious.

When I was like 17 or 18 I was walking home from school and a white van driving down the street slowed down near me (I know, sketchy!). The driver rolled down his window and yelled out "Hey man, do you want some speakers!" I knew it had to be a scam, but I wasn't interested in speakers anyway, so I just said no and kept walking. I never realized this was such a widespread thing.

Yeah, It happened to me in my bank's parking lot.

"We just removed these fine speakers from a rich guys house during an upgrade...."

Riiiight....

i think they told me they were installers or something and they got an extra pair in a shipment and wanted to make a few bucks and didn't want to return the speakers. i think they wanted $500, i told them i didn't have that kind of money and then they dropped it to $300.

Legally it was a scam. Misrepresenting a product is fraud and false advertising. Pyramid schemes are fraud also, most fly under the law due to several loopholes, but many are taken to court and successfully defeated.

People need to get their definitions straight.

I got asked in the BestBuy parking lot in Gainesville.
Interesting, the only time I've been approached by white van guys was also in Gainesville.

They use all sorts of vehicles around here - even shopping carts! They roll through the parking lot pretending to have left whatever store the cart is from, with the speakers/tv/whatever, trying to sell it.

As has been noted, your buddy was not scammed, he did not, however, get a stellar deal. He got what he paid for.

My uncle bought a pair of the tower speakers. He has them hooked up to a Yamaha receiver. They sound OK. They did get loud and didn't blow out. He's happy with them, so I guess that's OK.

I'll stick with my Onkyo receiver and Yamaha bookshelf speakers for a grand total of $170 from hot deals.

HAHA! this happened to me not a week ago, but i knew exactly what was going on
the guy was trying to sell me the 505, i drove him nuts bargaining prices..he started trying to get me to buy them for $800 and a half hour later i gave him $100 for the set, needless to say i got a goood deal, and they sound great for a $100, somehow i got through to the guy that whomeever sold HIM the speakers ripped HIM off, and that no one else would touch these for even $100, except me lmaooo

here's the set i got: http://www.genesismedialabs.com/505.htm

okay how do you say it sounds good.. i can picture these things being very heavy on bass.. and not much midrange and some highs.

if you listen to hiphop/rap then yeah it will sound decent.. guess 100 bucks for a whole set isnt bad but still i wouldtn spend my 100.
